This is very true. Especially in a remote setting, where most people are on their own, usually in a home/home office environment, isolation can creep in without their even knowing it. All the strategies to meaningfully connect with people should factor this in, and be even more empathetic, given the degree of separation. 1) Weekly connects (work related status and support call, preferably video) 2) Daily check-ins (not more than a couple of minutes unless necessary .. even on chat, not necessarily a call) 3) Chat and chill - say 1/week, catch up on video with your favourite beverage in hand and talk anything but work 4) Thank You Board on the group channel to appreciate contributions, anyone can call out colleagues in appreciation

Some ideas I can think of: 1. Interactive online simulations that allow employees to navigate changes in a controlled, risk-free environment. A gamification element can make the learning process engaging and enjoyable. By providing hands-on experience in a virtual setting, it is possible to reduce the fear of the unknown and build confidence in handling new challenges. 2. Virtual mentorship programs to foster connections between employees and seasoned colleagues who have successfully navigated similar changes. These mentors can offer guidance, share their experiences, and provide reassurance. By doing this it is possible to alleviate fears and empower your team members with the knowledge and confidence they need to cope with their fears.

Communication is key for any change. Communicate transparently, acknowledge the concerns of employees, take small steps and celebrate milestone.

In a remote setting, fostering trust becomes absolutely crucial, and requires more effort than in-person environments where the human energy is palpable. Make the effort. Empathize, seek feedback, provide support, convey appreciation, and most importantly, follow-up very promptly on support needs to show it genuinely matters. If possible, when people make appreciable contributions, setup individual skip levels so they get visibility and recognition. In my experience, that has seemed to matter for people to see their efforts are getting wider and higher recognition.

Be transparent and foster trust. Important to encourage employees to "Voice Opinions Fearlessly" and share their questions. Allow for anonymous questions basis country culture being dealt with and topic sensitivity. Share as a heads up, share more details once the idea/design is fully firmed up, take the teams along through the change process to make them feel as a part of the change and not just a recipient

Celebrate wins because ultimately, it's a human thing to feel valued, situated, recognised and rewarded. Ultimately, it's all about energy, motivation, morale and self-esteem. Both individually and for teams. Set the bar high, though, so the team really feels the impact of the accomplishment, and share it widely across the org, so others can feel the culture of it. When you celebrate, set the tone by tying it as much as possible to business so even leaders and sponsors get in on it

Choose milestones per change project to applaud and "Celebrate Success". Acknowledge all key team members for all the hard work in materializing the change milestone.

The Covid-years provided me with a lot of insight in how to navigate resistance to change while working remotely, as we invited people from outside our own team to work with us on strategic questions that impacted the organisation. Because the environment changed and everybody felt that personally, we were able to create new projects on change in practice (instead of talking about the necessity of change). By staying in the moment and engaging with colleagues, we learned more on agility in one year than in the five years previous to this situation.
