First, make the organization's value and mission your own. Then challenge the organization to think in terms of relationships rather than returns. I call this paradigm shift moving from "fundraising" to "friend-raising". Second, every professional in advancement and philanthropy knows that the sector lives off of "war stories." Be prepared with anecdotes for a wide variety of questions. The best stories might be the ones that are most human and most relatable for the interviewers, such as those that reflect ultimate success along with some learning on ones part.

2 Know Your Impact

In philanthropy, your impact and how you measure it is often scrutinized. Be prepared to talk about your past experiences and the outcomes of your work. All of this is true. One of the most common questions I’ve gotten is, how much have you asked for? This is challenging particularly as you’re starting out or trying to progress in your career. I try to use a both/and strategy to demonstrate expertise and experience and I reframe philanthropic conversations towards a team approach. “Yes, I’ve successfully solicited for a gift, in the 25K+ range. And I was part of the team that secured a $5M gift. In this context, we chose the lead solicitors based on the relationship to the donor. My job was to lead from behind, and I provided the strategy, coaching and briefing notes. As a team, we were so proud when the donor told us…”
