Nobody is perfect and the important thing is to learn from the experience. When I joined a big 4 after the university I merely understood the job. My profile was completely theoretical and useless in audit field. So I evaluated the gap and started accelerate my professional skills with practical experience. A year after I was fully confident in my practical accounting knowledge, 3 years after I was among best consultants of the year.

It's quite a difficult story as there are corporate cultures where a feedback is not a routine element of the process. I worked with a boss who rarely gave comments. He followed an idea that his way as a mentor was to check and adjust mistakes. Without long topics. Thus I had to build a trust and several months after asked for a precise and detailed feedback about my contribution to the project. It took us about 15-20 minutes and it became a very productive experience for the both of us as I believe he had also benefited from thinking about his leadership potential in this moment. I gathered very valuable points of experience and practical advises of how to improve performance. Don't be afraid of such topics, it's always a win-win story

Seriously, it's quite a challenge to find a mistake in accounting data and auditing practice contributes a lot to this skill. My approach to this follows deductive method - meaning analyzing the whole picture such as financial statements, noting inconsistencies and after these preparations are completed, making a detailed dive into doubtful elements to investigate the error.
