I used to be kind of shy so I don't talk much publicly but I once volunteered for a World Environment Day awareness program and I was given the microphone to talk. I was scared at first. Volunteering is work. Work is work. There is absolutely no need to make a distinction between skills gained through paid work and skills gained through unpaid work. This is a red herring. This is an issue of privilege. Those who need paid work to be able feed and clothe and provide shelter to their families through working one or two or three paid jobs, may not be able to volunteer. Those who have a disability that makes having a consistent schedule impossible, may only volunteer. Like I said, work is work; paid or unpaid, and we should stop making a differentiation through resumes, cover letters, or interviews.

I have done this before as volunteering is a passion of mine and I knew the community does a lot of outreach events. I made sure to save this ace card til the very end. I then played that ace card by showing them how I would love to be the one to table those events or to be an assistant to the primary point of contact who tables the events. This showed that I have a deeper interest in the company, just really do enjoy volunteering and that if I am going to do it why not do it with the company, I get to vibe with my coworker(s) more, and meet residents.
