Here's how you can navigate difficult interview questions with ease.

When you're in an interview and presented with a problem statement, it's essential to ask logical follow-up questions to fully understand the issue. Take notes on the key points and then structure your response using the STAR model: Situation, Task, Action, and Result. Utilize past examples to illustrate your outcomes and emphasize the lessons learned. This approach not only demonstrates your problem-solving skills but also showcases your behavioral traits, showing that you meticulously research problems before formulating action plans and refrain from jumping to conclusions. I would recommend buying yourself some time by rephrasing the interviewer’s question or asking for more clarity. Use the SARL technique to respond to questions. Let me briefly tell you SARL is an acronym that I created where S describes a Situation, A stands for Actions you took or would take, R is for the Result that came out of your actions, and L is Learning you gained out of it. So, use this strategy to articulate your responses well for those difficult interview questions.

Take a moment to gather your thoughts before responding. It's okay to pause briefly to formulate a thoughtful answer rather than rushing into it.

As a recruiter, the key piece of an interview, is for the candidate to be knowledgable about the topics provided on the resume. If the skill or experience is important enough to list on the resume, then you should be prepared to provide even more detail when interviewing with prospective employers. The more you can demonstrate your expertise in the field, the more at ease the employers will feel when considering you for their company. Don't provide any details on the resume, that you can't back up in good detail.

You can't predict exactly what you'll be asked in an interview, but methodical preparation will help you get ready for difficult questions. Then add the skills that you demonstrated in each situation - use the job posting as a guide to which skills are likely to be particularly important for the role. Finally reflect more deeply on the key decisions that you made in each situation - think about "why" as well as the "how" you did things, and what you learnt from the experience. This should give you a strong foundation for the questions you may be asked.

A lot of times people fail interviews by not asking good questions. A lot of difficult interview questions are intended to see if candidates ask for more info. Candidates fail by making assumptions instead of asking “should I be making assumptions here or can I ask more questions?” A lot of times they want to know your thought process and see how you deal with limited info. Don’t be afraid to challenge them in diplomatic ways. Conflict resolution is a key part of collaboration. No one expects you to know everything. Often, how you behave in the interview is more important than getting the perfect answer. Showing that you’re enthusiastic, capable, engaged, and collaborative goes a long way in healthy workplaces.

Las preguntas siempre tienen un trasfondo, donde más que evaluar la respuesta evalúas actitudes, formas de actuar, impulsos, manera de pensar, si es una persona que rápidamente piensa en soluciones o se queda clavado en el problema, etc. Ser los más claros que se pueda a la hora de contestar, muchas veces la respuesta de los candidatos arroja más información de lo que se pide por lo tanto como RH te das cuenta de cosas que quiere evitar o actitudes que tiene que quiere o busca no resaltar.

Ask for context around the question, to ensure you understand what the interviewer is trying to hone in on. For example how you work with others? Are they trying to understand how you work with your peers, managers, stakeholders, clients/customers etc. How to get context... To ensure I provide a relevant example, when I discuss how I work with others, when you say others are you referring to peers, managers etc. Asking for further info (in the right way) demonstrates other key soft skills.

If an example comes to mind, but you're not sure it'll hit the mark of what the interviewer is looking for, you can say, "I'm thinking of an example where I did X. Is that something you'd be interested in hearing about? Otherwise I can think of a different example if you were hoping to understand something else."

If you’re not naturally a cheerleader, don’t worry. You can still be authentic and keep it real while staying professional. Get all your stress and complaints out well before you interview. Set yourself up to be at your best. Practice nervous system regulation- whatever techniques work best for you. Find safe ways to express all your challenging emotions so you’re not bringing old resentments, stress, anger, etc. You don’t need to be fake to ace an interview. You do need to practice your tone, delivery, and demeanor when rehearsing your talking points so that you know how you sound. It’s uncomfortable to record yourself talking, but it is extremely helpful to move thru the discomfort in order to practice enough to get better.

Practice your talking points so you know how you want to position yourself. It’s important to be honest and to tell the truth. The mistake people often make is to focus too much on the negative. No one expects you to know everything, and they appreciate it when you’re clear about your strengths and weaknesses. Especially when you can frame it in a collaborative way, so that you’re showing a high amount of self awareness and ability to leverage the team to get to the goal. Don’t wait for an interview to learn about a skillset that’s important to the role. Do a lot of prep work so that you’re as knowledgeable and informed as possible to step into the role.

Honesty is paramount in any interview. But one common pitfall I see is candidates that speak to what "we" accomplished on a project, rather than highlight their individual achievements. During an interview I'm assessing you, not your entire team! Be sure to speak to the cross-functional nature of your work, but don't be afraid to call out your specific tasks you were responsible for, as well as any decisions you made, specifically. You can of course speak to who you worked with, and any challenges you overcame, but be sure to clarify each person's role in the project.

This is a key point. For a number of a reasons, 1, you're expecting them to do the same. 2, you're going to get caught out. 3, you wanna make sure YOU can do the job. Sometimes it's difficult not to embellish the truth but if you're telling someone that you're a whizz in one software and then they use and you're clueless - day one is going to be difficult!

Answer questions with questions. When a challenging question is posed… Stop, take your time, and ask additional questions to better understand how to tackle it ?? Rushing into answering questions, even if you get the answers right - can show haste (which may be perceived negatively). It’s not a race, there are no additional points for the first one to hit the buzzer ??

Before your interview, practice answering common questions and think about tough ones they might ask. Imagine how you'd answer them. And during the interview, stay calm, breathe, and act confident. Listen carefully to their questions and ask for clarification if needed. Answer by highlighting what you're good at. "If you're not sure how to answer, be honest and say you're still learning, and explain how you'd handle the situation if given the opportunity. Remember, how you handle tough questions can affect what the interviewer thinks of you.

If you're asked difficult questions during the interview, one might assume that these are challenges you'd face if you were offered the position. Don't shy away from asking questions at the end of the interview pertaining to the questions that you were asked. For example, if you're interviewing for a management position and were asked about a time where you had a difficult direct report, it would be fair to ask at the end of the interview about the team, and inquire if there are any performance issues, given the question that was asked of you.
