Here's how you can navigate counter offers from your current employer during a job search.

If your employer makes a counteroffer, you should treat that as an insult. If they could offer you more, why didn’t they get on the front foot and offer you that in the first place? Now, if you didn’t have an open conversation with your employer about the problems you’re experiencing and give them the chance/time to remedy things, that’s on you.

Reflect on why you wanted to leave initially. Were you seeking better growth opportunities, a different work environment, or a higher salary? A counter offer might address the financial aspect but may not solve the underlying issues that led to your job search.

I think it will be good to clearly communicate the reasons for seeking new opportunities outside the organization by purely focusing on professional growth & for market value rather than any personal grievances. Taking counter offer it's not just about salary package it could be future professional growth & other development, any other additional benefits like flexible working environments & any additional paid time off.

Consider the counter offer carefully. Does it genuinely address your concerns? Sometimes, employers may make promises to keep you but fail to follow through once the immediate threat of you leaving has passed.

Accepting a counter offer can have long-term consequences. Your employer may view you as less loyal, which could impact future promotions or responsibilities. Additionally, you might feel obligated to stay longer than intended, which could limit future career moves.

If something doesn’t feel right about staying, trust your instincts. If you’ve already mentally prepared to move on, it might be better to stick with your decision. And Listen!! Understand that your decision might affect your relationship with your current employer, and they may react emotionally. Be firm but empathetic in your response.
