Here's how you can navigate conflicts, maintain trust, and respect as a Servant Leader within a team.

Building trust comes down to building open and honest relationships through communication. Personally I value personal relationships and connections over business. It always comes first, and when I sit down with someone to have a challenging conversation they should always know I'm coming from a place of love and genuine care for them as a person. Sometimes that means setting them free from a business relationship with me or the company I work for. You can lead by fear, or love, and should always do your best to choose love.

I love how empathy is often defined as "walk a mile in the other person's shoes". It captures the power as well as difficulty in doing that. To be genuinely empathetic and not just superficially, it takes a lot of serious effort in truly understanding the other person's state of mind, personality, worries, hopes - relating to them, and using that to inform our interaction. When it works and I am able to do it, it is very satisfying and has led to long term, trustful rapport. And there are (even if rare) times when in the heat of the moment, I've done the opposite and it shows me how difficult it really is, indeed, and how far I have to go.

I always make sure I treat people as I would like to be treated. Have empathy and build trust by actively listening to your staff, ask them if what you heard was correct, be honest above all. Ensure you always lead by example and ask yourself how people would perceive your responses and actions. Always have self reflection both ways and encourage this behavior as well as providing it as an example of trust.

As a servant leader, my biggest skills are active listening and emotional intelligence. I always strive to stop a conflict even before it surfaces. And I always understand the root cause of the conflict, understand both situations without taking any sides and always follow up to ensure the conflict doesn’t affect the way team members collaborate.

Another component of active listening is ensuring your team knows you understand their views/ideas. Rephrasing the concept calling attention to a key or interesting component is one way to show you truly have been listening and value what was said. This helps others open up more and generate even more ideas to really get the ball rolling on excelling as a team.

Servant leadership emphasizes leading through listening and fostering collaboration rather than imposing ideas. Active listening is a cornerstone of this leadership style, especially during conflicts. It involves fully focusing on the speaker, understanding their message, and responding thoughtfully. This means giving undivided attention, avoiding interruptions, and not pre-formulating responses while the other person is speaking. Such attentiveness demonstrates respect and value for team members' input, which can reduce tensions and create a cooperative atmosphere. By actively listening, leaders can uncover common ground and shared objectives, facilitating constructive conflict resolution and stronger team cohesion.

Active listening is one of the most difficult things engineers sometimes face when they move to positions of leadership. I spent most of my life cracking puzzles and solving problems quickly and, more often than I would like, I used to find myself trying to grab problems still in the air to give them a quick solution when the person in front of me actually wanted to be heard or, oftentimes, had a non-trivial nuance to convey that got lost in the hyper-objective way we sometimes use to communicate at work. Employing Active listening and, even more important, developing a *deep rapport* with people to be able to understand their positions and hear them completely is crucial to having a high functioning team and to mediating conflicts

I have been fortunate to be able to work with great minds and diverse teams. Collaboration is harder when experiences differ, but the results are totally worth the extra challenges. Each situation is different, but a good role of the leader is to help identify each way a person can contribute to create a better result -- while making sure they have enough autonomy to choose their own contributions. There is no generic formula for this -- but creating safety is essential. Great collaboration is born when people feel comfortable to share incomplete ideas and incorporate other people's perspectives into their own thinking.

At one position, I made changes to job descriptions to better reflect my expectations for certain positions. Then made an interview council, so 3 others plus me would be on the panel . One time, we interviewed a black, female, Engineer! Fantastic fantastic! When we met after interview to compared notes, they voted against her because they thought she might be a distraction to the rest of the group! I told them WHY we would hire her! After she started, I had three Engineering Directors come into my office to tell me they would not use her! She was hired as a Sr. Designer, a role she wanted! So, I told those Directors WHY I hired her and how she would understand their Engineers! In three months, she was Most Requested Designer out of 63!

Know your strengths first. Know the strengths of others close to you second. Build a diverse team or drive interactions that engage people with skills different from your own and from your team members in order to maximize effectiveness. Hold firm to your beliefs, but ask to be challenged and be willing to have your mind or your perspective changed. Always keep the goal in mind.

Our teams are wonderful mirrors for our behavior, as are our children. Just as nearby vibrating strings tune to each other in solfeggio notes, people do too. It’s called ‘Sympathetic resonance.’ (Look it up, it’s really interesting.) Holding ourselves to a high standard of conscious awareness, being, and energetic ‘vibe’ is the best thing we can do when leading a team—assuming we are still grounded and plugged into the work itself, which is easier the more purpose-driven and aligned you are with the mission.

Leading by example is not about you talking but doing and showing with your actions and engaging in perspective-taking during conflicts, displaying behaviour that reduces threats, demonstrating reflective skills, practicing open communication, and recognizing that relationships are built on mutual understanding and trust. Whenever I am faced with conflicts within my team, I ensure that I involve the people who are directly affected to hear their own perspectives & bring up my own suggestions on how to resolve them. This fosters dialogues and collective deliberation that effectively communicates the rationale behind the decision on how to resolve the issue, which not only relaxes my team but also motivates them to participate more willingly.

It is easy to feel the temptation of trying to become an ideal model, but it is also unnecessary. Being human is something we all share, and it contains all the basic ingredients for becoming a great leader. Being a great human -- open, honest, collaborative, empathic, well intentioned, responsible -- is all you need to become a great model. There will be times when you will fail to be as good as you would want to. In those moments, being open and honest and keeping your focus on the collective goals instead of any extraneous agenda will make sure your humanity is seen as a virtue, not a burden.

A spoone of our own chocolate that we preach, for example Agile Scrum values (openess, focus, courage, respect and commitment) or other from other frameworks or companyes, we shoukd follow them, as well as preaching them. Because as Servant Leaders we do not serve our selves, we do not lead the company or the product or service; we serve the leaders to lead by fascilitating meetings to outcomes and coaching and mentoring people and leaders towards achiving their goals.

Along with the usual best practices and multiple ways of providing support, when it comes to soft skills like servant leadership and empathy, it works well when it is part of the team's values and "culture". The team sees it as important to their identity and effective ways of working can be built around it, such as: 1) Every voice counts 2) Solution orientation 3) No personal attacks, Etc.

Servant leadership is deeply human in that it tries to offer people a path of support and improvement. Too many workplaces rely solely on the model of "prove yourself," which can pit person against person and defeat teamwork. When a person struggles, are they willing to learn? That is a good team player--and you won't know if he or she is unless you serve by providing growth support.

Providing support as a servant leader means being a steadfast resource for your team during conflicts. As Ken Blanchard said, “The key to successful leadership today is influence, not authority.” Offer conflict resolution training and mediation to equip your team with the tools they need to handle disputes constructively. Be approachable and available to discuss concerns, demonstrating your commitment to their personal and professional growth. This investment shows that the team's success is a shared endeavor. Transform conflicts into growth opportunities by guiding your team through challenges with empathy, resources, and unwavering support, reinforcing a culture of mutual respect and collaboration.

Recognize and value team members' efforts and contributions on a regular basis. Acknowledging their efforts contributes to the development of a strong, solid relationship.

Hindsight is 20/20. Taking lessons learned from situations, both wins and losses, lead to growth individually and for the team. Taking time to truly pause and reflect on a project helps individuals to harness what they have learned and carry that knowledge forward to future projects/situations.

Encouraging reflection helps the team learn from conflicts and grow. After resolving a major project dispute, I facilitated a retrospective meeting where we reflected on what caused the conflict and how we could prevent it in the future. This reflection process fostered a culture of continuous improvement and mutual respect.

Address conflicts promptly and constructively. Avoid ignoring or suppressing them. Encourage open dialogue. Create a safe space for team members to express their viewpoints. Seek win-win solutions. Collaborate to find resolutions that benefit everyone. Use active listening and empathy to understand the underlying causes of conflicts

Servant Leadership - like Empathy, Integrity, Emotional Intelligence and the other 500 .. is a word that has been used to the point of abuse. For me, the learning over time has been - both personally, as well as my engagement with my world - that the only important thing is to: "Keep it simple." Ignore the jargon that I've been conditioned with since the start of working life, and: 1) Be a positive, optimistic human being in my interactions 2) Understand people as having their own set of issues and hopes 3) Do the right thing, but without making it personal (point at the problem, hopefully with a solution or two, but not at the person) Making it a way of life amid work pressures etc is the real journey.

Top 3 things that helped: 1. Be an example: I strive to model the behavior and work ethic I expect from my team. This includes transparency, accountability, and a relentless focus on our mission and values. 2. Prioritize Listening Over Speaking: Ensure every team member's voice is heard and valued, be it their first day at the office, never mind, their thoughts must be heard. 3. Encourage Collaboration: Promote a collaborative culture where everyone's input is encouraged. Cross-functional teams and brainstorming sessions help us leverage diverse perspectives.

Transparency, Integrity and Empathy. As a leader, it is important to take the time to listen to both sides of the story without judgement. Stay strong in your values and give honest feedback - encourage self awareness within team members. And it is most effective when it is done with patience and kindess - empathetic leader will always have the trust of the team. There are also times when the leader might have to step aside and let the teammates sort it out themselves ensuring your are available to them for conflict resolution, because sometimes "escalation" as it is seen may not be conducive to mutual, friendly resolutions.

Some conflict is grounded in hidden fears. This is where strong neutral facilitation skills as well as modeling vulnerability and a growth mindset can help. A servant leader (particularly a trustworthy one) can facilitate and encourage disclose to bring fears into the open. When we show that we're doing this with the intention of reducing those fears, we can build trust, empathy and in turn make significant progress when resolving conflicts. Finally, resolving conflict gives team members evidence that conflict can be an opportunity to form deeper bonds as a team.
