When talking about machine learning, we should know the size of the dataset for proper decision-making about the algorithm we might use. In many cases, simple statistical approaches are sufficient to model our data.

Learn about all the basic classification and regression algorithms like K- nearest neighbor, Support Vector Machines, Neural Networks, Logisitic Regression. Try undrestanding the mathematical models which hyperparameters are at play and how to create a generalized model with good accuracy. Learn about ROC curve and confusion matrix. Last but not least implement them by writing the actual code that picks instances and fits the model and then calculate the accuracy.

Even with a deep understanding, overly technical language can hinder communication. It is very key to tailor your ML explanations to your audience. Knowing their technical level beforehand is key for effective communication, whether it is an interview or presentation.

Before diving into your answer, ensure you fully understand the question. Misinterpretation can lead to incorrect or incomplete answers. If the problem statement is ambiguous/open ended, ask for specifics. For example, inquire about the nature of the data, the expected output, or any constraints. If certain details are not provided, make logical assumptions but state them explicitly. This shows your thought process and can help guide the interviewer.

Be very clear and specific about the requirements. The more clarity is there , the easier to build models and algorithms. So after assess all the requirements properly and see the kind of problem and data at hand. e.g., in medical data we need to caters for false negatives more than false positives so understanding the nature and domain of problem is very necessary.

So start composing your thoughts about the problem, what could be the limitations, try running real world scenerios about the data as well as various solutions that you are trying to put forth. Write down all the points somewhere and connect them before presenting them. A well thought out response is going to leave a lasting impact.

Write the algorithm with the variable names and functions that is in the lingo of ML like iterations, alpha, gamma etc for Neutral nets and for SVM respectively. How to handle missing info in the data or if you assume the data is filtered and in great shape then write those assumptions as well.

No ML algorithm is perfect. We need to make tradeoffs such as 1. overfitting the model /algorithm Vs. too generalized(underfitting) 2. Model complexity Vs Computational Complexity 3. Bias Vs Variance Tradeoff So a high bias algorithm is going to oversimplify the data and a high variance is going to overfit the data.

Every approach in machine learning has tradeoffs. Understanding and discussing these tradeoffs shows depth of knowledge. - Model Complexity vs. Interpretability: Explain the tradeoff between using a simple, interpretable model and a complex, high-performing one. What is the upside from an accuracy / performance perspective. Performance vs. Resource Consumption: Discuss the balance between achieving high accuracy and the computational resources required. Bias vs. Variance: Address how your approach handles the bias-variance tradeoff.

For instance: (a) In predictive maintenance, high recall (minimizing false negatives) is crucial to avoid costly unplanned shutdowns and equipment failures, even if it means some false positives (unnecessary inspections). (b)Conversely, in anomaly detection during drilling operations, high precision (minimizing false positives) is paramount to prevent unnecessary and costly interventions, potentially at the cost of missing some actual anomalies.

(b) Explain your experience in building end-to-end machine learning solutions - but be honest on your actual contribution.

Be confident in your response and thoroughly explain why it is effective. If possible, illustrate your explanation with a relevant example from a past situation where you applied a similar solution. Always consider the model inputs and outputs carefully. In reality, data of some inputs are not easy to collect. In this situation, a machine trained with training data cannot be more useful, and even validated, to be applied in actual conditions.
