"Don't shy away from projects that push you out of your comfort zone;" This is very important. Just build something. It does not matter what and see it thought to the end. The second, third and four iterations are always easier. You will quickly discover if you have an affinity for a particular area as by-product. Invest in yourself. I've changed career in a significant way a number of times. Some of those careers are seemingly unrelated. But I've found that there are always transferable skills and experience. An engineer with experience as a technician has real world experience that leads to better designs. Public speaking and traing delivery skills lead to better communications with customers and colleagues. Any chance I have to gain a new skill I will be enthusiastic for.

Having a rudimentary understanding of any new technologies is always useful. It will help determine. - Is this useful? - Will this make any current process more efficient? - Will this garner any advatige over a competitor? If these points are addresses then it can be determined how in-dept to go with the new technology.

Develop adjacent skills such as embedded software, VHDL or RF design. Also practice soldering and other fabrication skills so you can build good prototypes. Becoming a "T-shaped" engineer with some breadth in a few disciplines but with depth in one ensures you are flexible but can take on very difficult, high value work in your chosen specialism. Ensure that your secondary and tertiary disciplines are complementary.

Do this about every 6 months even when you are not actively looking for another opportunity. Always have a resume ready. I have met some great people just by doing interviews. Keeping you resume updated will give you feedback with regards to the direction your career is moving and if you need to pivot to push it in the direction you want it to go.

Knowing when you have reached a limit and taking a break, to come back refreshed, is productive. If it means you get up from your desk and go for a walk for ten minutes to change the way you're thinking. Or perhaps take a a couple of days leave and a chance to completely reset. The ability to reset and return leads to better solutions and fewer mistakes.

AI seems to be something that designers are scared of, but look at it as an opportunity to improve your personal productivity and delivery performance. I see it as another form of automation, which has been around for decades. Think PCB autoroute for example. AI in electronic design is coming with products such as Flux AI. Learn how to use that technology to your benefit and stop wasting time on mundane tasks that don't add value and don't exercise your expertise.
