In the plastic packaging industry, (and other industries such as automotive, medical etc.), it is very important to listen to the customer. R&D needs to sit face-to-face with the folks that are building/using/filling with a certain product. This way: 1. Nothing gets lost in translation through Sales/Marketing and/or Technical Service. Although those folks are great and have very important roles, they don't wear the R&D "hat". 2. R&D usually has the best idea of the process used to produce the grade and what it might take to make the grade. 3. As far as cost of production, (and all that entails), R&D works with Sales/Marketing to optimize the process and optimize profit margins.

Listening to the voice of the customer and not losing sight of the goal/aim of the product are two of the most important areas to focus on. 'Nice to have' features need to be tempered with actuality - does the product/customer/solution 'need to have' that extra feature just because you are a clever engineer, or will it add extra cost and complexity to the point where you have missed the brief....

And now days, its important to also think about how can I make this development / product more sustainable? These are initial questions to begin exploring. Furthermore, the better you know your consumer: their habits, their way of socializing, what they like to do, etc., the best that you can propose in a product and packaging that is relevant form them. Don't choose what you think is best, choose what they tell you is best for them.

You may need to perform a Freedom To Operate (FTO) study to ensure the product/company are not going to be in legal troubles. I have experienced first off prototypes that were 90% of the way to the final product, as well as prototypes that were a long way from the final result. While you may think a reasonably refined, 90% - 'almost there' - prototype would produce a faster to market result, it is interesting that in the end the timeline of activity does not vary so much between the two. Iteration, improvement, troubleshooting and failures along the way happen in both cases, just with different timing...sometimes it may be best to see the failures/issues earlier with a basic prototype rather than be 'fooled' into thinking that the effort required to get a 90% prototype to market will be minimal.

Product R&D involves multiple iterations, funding phases, and testing/validation campaigns. Ideally, the goal is to expose the product as much as possible to real use scenarios. Therefore, incorporation of any lessons learned and gathered feedback into the product will enhance considerably its chance of success.

As has been suggested in other posts, ensure that test work includes the real world application - not just lab or workshop trials. For OEM's, partnering with a customer (for the real world test work) who is fully invested in the outcome of the product, is essential - i.e. if the product is successful, the customer also benefits. If they are not invested in a good outcome, or the perceived benefit for them is too low, then the test work/product will invariably fail due to lack of care...or may even be sabotaged by detractors.

Determine whether your topic can be quickly developed and/or duplicated in AI. After that step, I would be checking along the way for any AI developments as you pursue your topic of R&D. Never let AI out of sight going forward. It will be taken advantage by your competitors, if not yourself.
