Here's how you can navigate career decisions in executive roles with ease.

The importance of cultural fit cannot be understated in navigating career decisions. Take time to assess a company's culture BEFORE making a decision. Ask lots of questions of current and former employees about the culture and listen 'between the lines' for what you're hearing in the answers. For example, how are decisions made, how is failure handled, what is celebrated, how are important decisions communicated, who is respected in the organization and why, and one of my favorites, when was the last time someone felt joy in the organization, and why? Ask for specific examples of these and other similar questions and pay attention to your instincts.

Easy? The easy bit is to do nothing. Navigating career decisions and change is not easy or straightforward, particularly the more experienced or senior you become. It is important to 'know they self' - know what you want and why as much as what you do not want and why. Write it down (perhaps a check list?). Be purposeful - use what you know to consider the pros and cons of each opportunity; make a choice and be purposeful with that choice. At every decision point, reflect on what you may have learned and review what you want and why - has anything changed, new or now obsolete?

There is nothing easy about this. The work is hard. It requires deliberate focus, and reflection. You can simplify the questions you ask though... 1. What's important to me? 2. What is non-negotiable? 3. How do I prioritize this list when making decisions? I like to start with simple words. Here are 3 that are important to me.. - Genuine - Curious - Impact

What is the reason behind this change? Is it desired or required? How do I measure the consequences of my decision? Am I ready to accept what comes by? Have I given it enough thought? Is this the time for it? A leader goes through a tumultuous feeling when making decisions like these. It is important for the leader to have enough support - both mental and emotional, from family and fraternity as the outcome maybe anyhting. Thus, a leader should take small calculated steps even after making the decision.

When setting career goals as an executive, clarity and realism are key. Envision your destination in five years, then map out achievable milestones. Embrace both vertical and lateral moves for growth. Stay flexible yet focused on opportunities aligned with your career vision.

Once you have a clear understanding of your values, the next step is to set specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound (SMART) goals.
