I left film school midway through and started working in the movie and television industry and got way more contacts and experience than I ever could have staying in school. That’s not to say school is a bad thing, it’s a great place to get started and start learning the basics of your craft. But where you really learn is in the real world.

While independent learning is completely viable given the plethora of knowledge available via the internet, I believe having experienced instructors who can act as mentors in a practical learning environment has a twofold advantage. One, they can provide perspective to enable students to achieve better results quicker and secondly, their experience and knowledge can streamline a student’s goals to produce an efficient path towards a chosen film production career. Independent learning requires an extremely focused individual who has the mental fortitude and patience to continue advancing while weeding out the available information that does not apply to their career path.

Network Network and Network some more. This is a very informal and formal way of increasing your chances of collaborating with talented people. No man is an island especially in various professions in life. I'll give an instance of a film project that my colleague introduced me too, there was a scene he had to shoot. Normally the scene would look like an ordinary scene that just needs the basics but because he was trying to execute this said scene with serious detailing he was confused and he invited me on set, I came we discussed the scene and we realized we needed a Vfx guy on set. I quickly called one of my friends who did Vfx and together we all executed this scene that looked normal to the eyes. Please Network fervently to expand.

You may have heard the saying that "your network is your net worth." Filmmaking is a collaborative process, with each department representing a cog in the machine. It's crucial to have something valuable to bring to the table. Many have ideas, seek experience, or are looking for employment. Ask yourself why someone should network with you and what makes you stand out. Why should someone invest (time or money) in you? Networking is essential, but be prepared and have a plan not just for yourself, but for others you're networking with. Become someone people can trust, rely on, and offer ways you can help solve problems with a smile, whether it’s running to get a coffee or finding technical solutions in R&D to solve problems on set.

Additionally, leverage LinkedIn and industry-specific platforms like Stage 32 to connect with professionals globally. As of 2024, these platforms offer virtual events and webinars that can broaden your network beyond local circles. Actively participating in these communities can lead to collaborations and open doors to international opportunities, amplifying your reach and professional growth.

Once you've established yourself as a PA, you'll start to meet people. The more you stand out - the better you do your job - the more people will take notice. That will lead to opportunity. Understand your endgame, use the job as an opportunity to get there.

We work in an industry that mainly does not care what your background is. That's a pro or a con depending on what kind of person you are. If you need a career path with clear stepping stones to the next door of opportunity where all you need to do is walk forward, this is probably not the best career for you. But if you can use whatever background you have to build a personalized, winding path to the next door, you might have fun in this field. For instance, I have a hardcore engineering background and limited artistic skills but was determined to write, produce, and direct animation. I forged my own unique path and while it took 10 years, NO ONE cares now because I've made things people like. That's the marker. Prove you can do the job.

You can start by creating a short film with friends or local aspiring filmmakers. Write a simple script, plan your shots, and use whatever equipment you have, even if it's just a smartphone. Once the film is shot, edit it using free software like DaVinci Resolve. Share the finished product on social media and video platforms like YouTube or Vimeo. Next, offer to shoot a music video for a local band or create a promotional video for a small business. This will help you build a portfolio and gain practical experience. As you develop your skills, network with other filmmakers and seek out internships or assistant roles on larger productions to continue growing and aligning your experience with your career goals.

There are no small projects. We all wish to work in a Netflix movie set, but the so-called small projects have helped many filmmakers make their way to the top. I cannot over-emphasize the need to gain experience by every legit manner possible. You can gain experience through creating your own content or volunteering in other people's projects. The hours are long, the conditions are challenging but having experience puts you at the front of the opportunities queue. Push hard while being patient with yourself. Be willing to be at it as long as it takes. Don't compare your journey to someone else's because you may end up being discouraged.

You may join film industry with no precise understanding of each position like me. Then, meeting a various people, discuss with them to understand what they are doing. Then, go back to yourself, what you want to achieve. Without experience, everything is on paper. For some people that work but I personally believe gaining experience is critical.

Choose process over end results. An insight that took me way too long to learn - choose projects that you genuinely enjoy working on. I love hard-hitting investigative docs, but after getting commissioned to make a heavy doc for VICE on guns in South-East Asia, I realized that that type of work isn't for me, even if the end result is great and useful. As a result, I shied away from developing that opportunity further. Start by experimenting, but pay close attention to what types of projects bring you joy, regardless of the outcome.

I hate to sound prosaic but if you are a writer, write. A producer, produce. You will learn at every step along the way. Be brave. Ignore naysayers. Make it happen.

Everything is done poorly at first so when your first movie is nothing like you have imagined don't give up. The filmmaking space demands persistence and consistence. People will start off not knowing what you are about, after a while you start to build some momentum and then finally find yourself and your audience. Rejection happens to the best of us, it's nothing personal. Remember what they say in motivation that how you fall is not as important as how you pick yourself up and forge forward after you have fallen? With the countless rejects you will get in this space, always remind yourself of this. Many a times the rejections have notes attached, go through those notes you may find you are so close to the mark.
