Review the original project request and create a list of questions based on your experience that will guide your boss or client to clarify their direction and main goals.

Schedule a Meeting: Request a one-on-one meeting with your boss to discuss specific projects. Ask Open-Ended Questions: Instead of waiting for instructions, ask clarifying questions. For example, "What are the key messages we want to convey in this design?" or "Do you have any specific design style preferences for this project?" Present Options and Get Feedback: Once you have a general idea, prepare a few initial design concepts to present. This can spark discussion and help you gauge your boss's preferences. Become a Resource: Show Your Design Knowledge: If your boss isn't familiar with design trends or best practices, politely share relevant resources or suggest design approaches that might work well for the project.

1) revisit the brief. Analyze every word. Go deep into the semsntics to find insight. Insight is the fuel of any meaning focused creativity. If you don’t have a story to tell, you’re just decorating someone else’s trite ideas. 2) Work past the first 10 ideas. The first ten are low hanging fruit that any lazy designer can harvest. The tasty fruit is higher in the tree and it takes effort to get to it. That’s what your boss likes to eat. Bring that in and see if he stays tongue tied. 3) Set the meeting and set it up as an idea session. Bring your level 2&3 ideas and see what they spark. Bosses are usually seasoned designers but their attention is torn between multiple projects. If you need their ideas, they likely don’t need you.

Help your boss to improve his/her communication skills by letting him/her know that you need a better explanation of what is required of you.

Sometimes a boss doesn’t have a vision to attach to the brief. His or her attention is split between 20 projects. Bosses are looking for “beautiful” solutions. These always come with a balance of surprise and appropriateness that is fully realized in elegant execution. If the boss doesn’t have a vision to lean into, then it’s time to earn the paycheck and bring him one. The first ten things you think of are also the first ten everyone else, designer or not, would think of as well. Bring three to ten solid second level sketches in and ask for thoughts. It shows initiative and will likely spark vision.
