Here's how you can navigate a boss who resists change or new ideas.

Building trust is always critical to the beginning of any new relationship. I always emphasize that trust is compromised of the what, how, and the who. The 'what' is the value of the work you're doing and your follow through with commitments. The 'how' is how you execute on your work, solving complex problems, being innovative, and collaborative. It's not just about what you accomplish but how you go about doing it. The 'who' are the relationships you build and who can speak to your credibility, and others who trust you. Consistency and integrity are key in all three components.

Gaining the trust of your boss starts with demonstrating unwavering integrity in all your actions; be someone who says what they mean and does what they say. Consistently deliver high-quality work and proactively communicate your progress and challenges, showing that you are reliable and accountable. Lastly, seek to understand your boss's goals and align your efforts with their vision, showing that you are committed to supporting their leadership and the overall mission of the organization.

Listen and Learn from people. Come to work with a positive mindset even when other people are negative. Leave work at work don't bring it home. Remember you live life one day at at time... Although I don't like hearing that it's the truth. Everyday can't be a bad 1

The next recommendation I have after building trust would be to start with the proposal first, the case for change, along with the WIIFM (what's in it for me). This allows space for questions and to understand the fears. Jumping right into the fears discussion gives the assumption that your boss is resistant and which may cause an adverse reaction.

In my experience fear of change is a huge hurdle for those in leadership, especially for those who have been in that position for a long time. I have found that coming with proposals that acknowledge the merit in how things have been done previously while showing options of moving forward with new innovations is vital in finding common ground with a boss who finds change difficult. Be empathetic as some things you may be asking to change were ideas that your boss may have brought in at some point so it is important not to discount the importance they have had.

To present a new idea to your boss effectively, start by clearly aligning your proposal with the company’s goals and how it addresses current challenges or opportunities. Provide data and evidence to support the feasibility and potential benefits of your idea, demonstrating that you have thoroughly researched and considered its impact. Finally, outline a clear, actionable plan for implementation, showing that you have thought through the steps needed to bring the idea to fruition and are prepared to lead or support its execution.

Look people in the eyes and speak with confidence. How do you get confidence by understanding all directions of your profession. Whatever it is at your job that people hate doing be the best at that. That's how you always remain having a job.

A boss is a boss a leader is a leader. One rules and the other serves. When you rule you are selfish and are not truly confident in yourself or abilities. When you lead, you listen and create an atmosphere that benefits everyone.

Suggest testing the waters with a small-scale implementation. This minimizes perceived risk and provides a real-world example of how the change can succeed. Finally, weave in the benefits that directly align with your boss's goals and values. Show how the change can make their life easier, enhance their performance metrics, or advance their strategic objectives. By aligning your proposal with their priorities, you’re not just proposing a change—you’re offering a bridge to their success.

Gathering data is always a helpful way to showcase the benefits of your proposal. Data can be gathered through a series of pilots, and/or proof of concepts. Both qualitative feedback from key stakeholders and customers, along with quantitative feedback from the business results are a great way to breakdown myths about the change.

This area can be tricky. People always stealing my ideas... Spotify, Meta, Instagram you name it however. Just because people take ideas from you doesn't mean your not valuable. Learn from what they did and don't make that mistake twice.

Empathy is always important anytime you are trying to share a new idea or proposal. Put yourself in your managers shoes, why might they be worried or opposed to your idea? What can you do to ease their worries about the idea? How can you mitigate risk up front? Coming from a place of empathy in understanding their concerns is always important in any large change. The ability to be patient, answer questions, and take the time to address concerns goes a long way.
