First thing after getting laid off is to review your KPIs in the previous company. Did you achieve them well? This can be unacceptable for ourselves. If the previous KPIs were met then a lot of factors happened which I don’t think you should worry because it’s not from you but it’s from the company. Evaluating the industry you keen to work for and the scale of the company itself in the new job offer are two most important factors. If KPIs were not met, then you got the answer and you have to evaluate your skills, strengths and weaknesses. Next question is whether you have improved yourself in that company? Taking additional course might be a thing for you.

I prefer to seek more information about what a person did during his downtime. This gives a pulse of the attitude and problem defining approach. Once a candidate could define the problem was that he was not in good books due to truth speaking approach, thus manager suggested his name for layoff, later in his down time he learned MS Projects from Youtube and now has started applying for Project Manager. He was ready for a trial as well. I hired him.
