Setting clear goals is important, but often times, leaders still fall short when doing this. Why? It is because they only set technical goals or only set business goals. It is important to address both the "what" and the "why" to get buy-in from a broad team. Once the goal is set, there also needs to be accountability. The team should readily know what their priorities are to hit that goal, if they are off track or on track and if they are trending up or down to the objective. Being clear upfront and fostering accountability is a vital element of setting effective goals.

I’ve found four items in my research and experience to motivate teams. I use acronym FACT. 1) fun fulfilling work tasks. The tasks and environment should be fun, that creates fulfillment. 2) autonomy/agency. The leader sets vision and example then gives autonomy as appropriate 3) competence. It is the leader’s responsibility to put the team member in situations appropriate to build confidence by competence. 4) team. Everyone wants to be a part of something bigger. I believe it's crucial to encourage progress and autonomy to foster leadership among all team members. This doesn't mean turning the team into a competition for leadership positions, but rather cultivating well-rounded collaborators who understand urgent demands, deadlines, projects, behaviors, and who can also recognize the challenges faced by their colleagues. A true leader should identify those excelling in projects that resonate with them and empower them to take charge. Additionally, it's important to remain attentive to potential difficulties, whether tight deadlines, technical issues, or even emotional challenges like anxiety, in order to provide necessary support and guidance.
