I use the who, what, and when strategy. 1.Who needs input. 2.What do they need do to. 3.When do they need to do it. I've learned everything takes longer than I think. This is true for events or proposals. Build in review times to: ??Check the script. ??Look at the first draft of grant. Include time to follow up. Folks are busy and may not respond immediately. Always, plan to submit earlier than the deadline. Now, will this always work? No. Sometimes it will be a scramble. You'll be working right up to the deadline. But the goal is to have fewer of those days.

I find one of the best tools for this is to secure a challenge match from a donor capable of giving at least 5 figures. The prospect of "doubling" their donation and helping the organization secure the matching funds can be a powerful motivator to give by a deadline.
