DO NOT START A JOB IN CUTOMER SERVICE, unless you also have the ability to satisfy a customer complaint. If you have to go to upper management to handle an issue, then you are not customer service. Don't attempt a job where the company can't or won't give you the ability to take care of any and all customer issues. But always listen, listen, listen. Then repeat the complaint to the customer to make sure you understand their total concerns. Then do what is right to assist that customer without having to put the off to a higher associate.

If you are dealing with a very difficult customer, try a few different tactics to experiment with what gets you to resolution. Everybody is different, but you'll start to see some techniques get to a resolution faster than other techniques.
