After going through the beginning stages of the writing process with them, students wrote their pieces longhand in their writer's notebooks. Getting kids creating is getting kids learning. Creative tools, like Scratch, are the best way you can give kids freedom and agency leading them to self-motivate and self-direct their learning. By having the chance to create they can chase their interests and dreams and learn the vital skills of goal setting, self assessment, and self-directed learning. Its easy for them to imagine a goal, but helping them stumble their way towards it is the best teaching can be. Having them do the work, ask questions, find solutions, collaborate, create, and learn all the while they do it. Creativity is the key to 21st century education.

Being digitally accessible demonstrates your commitment to their education and meets students where they are most comfortable. Less is more. You don't need, or want, too many platforms and systems. Dividing your effort only harms deep learning. It's best to dive deep and get comfortable with fewer tools rather than cover the same getting started tutorial seven different times. This is why I focus on Scratch. Learn one system, use it for K-10 and master it. Deeper experiences and more meaningful learning with less hassles, overhead and retreading ground. It's better to get to a mastery level in one thing than awareness of many. The mastery confers transferable skills more than vague and struggling intros to multiple platforms ever will.
