Here's how you can maximize strategic goals through teamwork.

In an ideal world, this would work. The reason this is a topic is because it isn’t as simple as aligning and communicating. In one year, the goals will change so often, reality is by the end of the year you are just happy you didn’t lose half of the team through it. I believe, we have to be talk clearly about what this is all about. The strategy of any ‘for profit’ company is exactly that. Make Profit. The role each one of use play doing so may or may not be something that we are happy doing. At the end, most people work to be able to eat, have a roof, and if, lucky have some fun. Attempting to convince a group of intelligent grown-ups that a ‘for profit’ company has a greater good as vision is just plain insulting.

If you present your strategy honestly for what it is you give the choice to people to decide if they support or not that vision. Once you get through that step, then yes, don’t try to make a horse fly but use the horse for what they are great at. Understand the skills you need to accomplish the strategy and then find the most diverse team to can to use their strengths to accomplish their goal. Just remember, the goal is to make money. How the company makes money may come in different colors: awesome customer service, highest data speed no matter where you are, sustainable energy. Dear Employers, don’t confuse your why with your how. The people working for you want to be treated as adults. It is a win win situation so just be direct.

I agree with this a lot. Remove the 2000 layers of approvals for people to be able to experiment. Remove the roadblocks your team faces to put the wheels in motion. Put things under perspective, sometimes is better to have 6 solutions to a problem than only 1 that doesn’t meet the requirements of 5 other teams. It is such an easier problem to resolve when you have 6 similar solutions to get to one than the other way around. Finally, for the love of everything that is holy, give them the credit for the effort and the backbone to take a risk. It doesn’t matter if the solution worked or not. What matters is the team did not stagnate. Fostering innovation doesn’t work if you punish solutions that didn’t work.
