My suggestion is to learn the philosophy behind all structural member design first, second design manually and then go to the software. Software are just tools which will assist you in analysis & design faster, that's it. Compare your manual design calculations to the software results. That give you a thick confident on yourself. For mainly analyzing big structures one may need software help. Even that too in early 90s engineers did manually use "Equivalent frame method".

Ok fine, in this era learning analysis & design software have become an essential one. Keep in mind that any software will have tools to code selection, to draw geometry of the structure, material selection tool, specifications (for beam releases), loading section, analysis part and design section with parameters. Staad.pro, ETABS, SAFE, RISA 3D all have the same interface. Few things for selection of the software are how these software's results are closer to the accuracy and how its user friendly so that the modeler's time would be saved.
