One way that I still see conference organizers and speakers creating barriers for folks with disabilities is in the Q & A portion of presentations and panels. Placing 2 microphones in the center aisle as the only means of asking a question serves mostly able-bodied participants. Utilizing other ways of gathering questions - inviting participants to submit questions ahead of time, making use of an audience participation system, having an assistant able to move about the room with a mic, and/or choosing real-time proctored Q&A via a platform like LinkedIn or X - can decrease barriers for disabled folks to ask questions and make comments after a presentation, which inevitably enriches the discussion.

Some conferences will provide a sign language interpreter. If you are working with an interpreter, do your best to get them a script before your talk. If you don’t use scripts (most my clients don’t) get them the outline and list of any technical, industry specific, foreign language, odd or new words you will be using.

First & foremost thing to keep in mind as a speaker is to stay as normal as possible in such a speech. The audience should not be made to feel that they are given some kind of special attention or treatment because of their disability. All the necessary adjustments that the speaker and his/her team had made to suit the needs of the occasion should come naturally.
