Here's how you can maintain motivation and passion for your social impact work in late career.

Although, most of us have experience in setting up goals or objectives in our work, we rarely set them up for ourselves. This is something I strongly recommend when considering new endeavors, such us a new job or a change in your career. In my experience, a good paycheck, a proper work-life balance and a good work environment are important motivation items but insufficient ones. Look for a rewarding purpose and values you can share. Culture is more important than great products, amazing strategies, profits or even excellent people. And don't expect to discover them later, ask about them before starting, either at a job interview, a discussion with potential co-founders of your new startup or any new endeavor you are about to engage in.

Definitivamente el concepto de éxito o experiencia significativa va cambiando a lo largo de los a?os de trabajo. En un principio, las metas se ven casi inalcanzables y muy relevantes pero conforme pasa el tiempo, se va evaluando de distinta manera todo lo logrado. No le quitamos méritos sino más bien, valoramos de diferente manera lo que nos apasiona. Sencillamente, vamos poniendo enfoque en que el paso sea más constante y persistente, en vez de más rápido. Cualquier objetivo planteado toma una relevancia distinta, sabiendo que el camino será tan gratificante como cumplir la meta trazada. Así que, reevaluar los objetivos con regularidad, puede ayudarnos a mantener la motivación a largo plazo.

As one progresses in a social impact career not only does your motivation change, but also your inspiration. One makes peace with what you can or cannot change but your experience over time also allows you to accept what you can or cannot influence. This realization makes you more realistic. One also have fewer career goals, quite simply you have achieved so many. Career goals becomes less important then and you look for meaningful value. Ways and means you can add value based on your experience and therefore your goals become more focused on bigger issues, global challenges and persistent challenges. This requires of course new learning and this helps shape your new aspirations (rather than career goals).

A veces, los frutos de nuestro trabajo no son visibles para nosotros. Sin embargo, están allí, creciendo silenciosamente. Mantén siempre en mente las historias de aquellos a quienes has ayudado. Son como semillas que has plantado a lo largo de tu vida. Y recuerda, la pasión no se encuentra en los grandes éxitos, sino en la satisfacción de saber que has hecho lo mejor que podías, que has dado tu corazón y tu esfuerzo.

Con el paso de los a?os, te vas dando cuenta que tu gran por qué en la vida es lo que te hace avanzar cada día. Si a esto le sumamos rodearnos de personas vitamina, estar siempre en continua búsqueda de ilusiones, aprendizajes y reconocemos y reconocen el significado de nuestro trabajo, tendremos muchas más posibilidades de estar motivado, o al menos ir a nuestro puesto de trabajo con una sonrisa.

Inspiración y crecimiento van de la mano. Invertir tiempo, energía y atención al crecimiento personal y profesional es la mejor inversión sobre todo cuando la inspiración se está agotando. ?Qué estas viendo? ?Qué estas leyendo? ?A quién esas escuchando? ?Cómo estas creciendo?

Visionary, enduring companies, have always had a purpose as part of their culture. But during most of the life of the modern corporation, they devoted themselves to produce profits, in the understanding that looking for your self interest is in the best interest of society at large. They believed that their best impact in the community would be offering excellent products and services. This belief proved itself wrong, so companies started to look for shortcuts to gap this shortcoming like CSR, ESG and others. The most enlightened went further, with a multi-stakeholder approach, including the planet as one of the most important stakeholders to be listened to. They define goals that should be achieved together, profits and impact.

Albert Einstein once said that we shouldn't expect different results by doing esentially the same things. Although, as a man of science, he referred to experiments in pursue of new nature laws or theories, this is true in everything we do. Many times we finde ourselves doing and repeating the same tasks or introducing homeopathic changes expecting that "this time it will be better". If we want to generate a breakthrough, to produce something radically new or just to make an impact we are not making today, changing is the way. Think of it, promote it, share it, embrace it.

Social impact work can be demanding physically, emotionally and mentally. And by self love, I’m not just referring to a vacation or bubble bath. What are the habits, practices and activities that feed your core?

Also consider how you can support other professionals and practitioners that are earlier in their social impact career. I found that by sharing my knowledge and experiences, insights and learnings, networks and resources helps to motivate me as well. It assists me to continuously learn more, adapt faster, remain open and and flexible, as well as test my perceptions and biases and of course, provides new energy that helps me to stay motivated.
