Here's how you can maintain motivation and focus while job searching post-layoff.

During a period in my career where I had been laid off, a mentor told me my job just became getting a new job. What that meant for me was to dedicate myself and my time to my job search with the same intensity I brought into the work place. If I were willing to work 8-10 hours a day, I should be willing to work at acquiring a new position for the same amount of time. Remaining disciplined during that period was difficult and being passed over several times was even more difficult but you have to reach deep and persevere. It was in many was harder than any job I’d held thus far. Keep looking, build connections and go to a lot of interviews. Learn from the turndowns and do your research before accepting the first offer.

My best bit of advice is to be kind to yourself. Treat the job hunt like a job but give yourself permission to feel good. That maybe a walk in your favorite place, eating your lunch with a friend or taking a hot bath. Whatever it is, follow the good feelings

I was made redundant during a company restructure. This was bad news for me, but I also believed bad news for the company itself. So although I'd been given a redundancy package, and had had my employment ended, I just kept turning up for work at the office. Some staff found it amusing, others found it confusing, but the directors confirmed they didn't need me to come to the office. I explained politely that as a salesman I could see that the company would lose opportunities if I wasn't at the office and I didn't need to be paid. This lasted two weeks and at the end of that time the company offered me the Head of Sales role. I stayed on!

Some years back when i was laid off, it was a hard and trying time for me. Everyone kept telling me to stay positive, which was the right thing to do at that time but it was so difficult to do just that. i just had to learn to stay positive during that period, it was a hard time for me but eventually my positivity paid off and i got another job after 8 months of searching.

As someone who is currently job seeking, my experience has been that never giving up is going to keep you going. You have your resume, you know what you'd like, so be encouraged to put your neck out and apply anywhere you're able. Even if you aren't a perfect fit, it's worth it to try. I've set a goal of applying to at least one opening every day. Yes, that means I've taken a lot of punches in the form of rejection, but I never feel like I've given up because I'm still seeking that one employer who sees the potential I have to offer.

Use google tasks and a browser plugin like "google tasks sidebar" and really just spend time brainstorming what you need to do. Then brainstorm what you need to do for what you need to do. Sounds confusing maybe at first, but as an example: "Update LinkedIn" - May come from your first brainstorming session, but after we push that deeper, we get: - Get new profile picture - Update Skills - Set up open to work status - Set up job search filters Now add all those tasks to your google tasks. You may at first find this list to be huge, but when you get to quickly start checking those tasks off and see how rapidly it's shrinking, you'll find it motivating!

A daily or weekly routine is super important to keep yourself organized. ~ Create, and keep a checklist of items that need your attention for the day or week. ~ Keep records of all job applications: Job title, company name, date applied, who you contacted at the company, salary range/ requested salary, full job description, and where you applied for the role (company site or career site). ~ Record next steps of the interview process, and timeline that was provided (and date of your first interview). It's important to know their hiring process, and who to contact after an interview. ~ Plan to attend networking opportunities, and local events in your field. ~ Expand your knowledge with in-person or online courses.

A daily routine can help you maintain saliency and relevancy in your network's minds. Setting a routine to share your knowledge on LinkedIn and connect with people in your network can help ensure your time between jobs is shortened. For me, I have focused on creating an active LinkedIn profile and sharing content with connections where I know they will appreciate the gesture. This includes - Daily posting and/or reposting of accessibility, disability-related content - Weekly(ish) newsletter - Commenting and liking content relevant to my areas of expertise I started this 6 months before more roles came to an end to test out what was possible in my overall schedule and what might get the attention of people who might hire me.

I too follow the daily routine of searching for potential jobs despite the fact that it seems hopeless at times. I too treated it like work, but I also take some time to get away from it and have some fun, or just time to think about where I am headed.

The goal is to never be in this space again, and find a career where you can work until retirement, but that means you may never have this time to also focus on growing yourself not just in skills your employer can benefit from, but skills and experiences that can improve your own life. Make sure that sort of self care is baked into your daily routine.

Comment on posts, add your opinion and don’t be afraid to have a voice! Not only is this good for your to keep your brain active but also helps you to keep boosting views to your profile. Reach out to recruiters and your network. 1-2 hours a day is a good rule of thumb to follow.

There is a whole world out there glued to their phones. There are so many opportunities to be part of topic forums, publications, user groups, etc that it is imperative to network with new people. Don't just rely on the people you know. Set a certain amount of LinkedIn connection requests and comment/post regularly. Create a newsletter and ask people to subscribe. The more people see you, the more they are inclined to reference or think of you when they receive job request. Branding is key

The thing to do right now is to learn HOW you best learn before jumping into any targeted learning. Here's how you're going to do that, for free, as well as get an introductory knowledge to AI. NOTE: The reason I focus on free resources is because AI itself often generates the courses you see and it is only "cleaned up" by a human. My Recommendation: - Go to youtube and watch videos on learning, make note of styles that resonate with you - Think of some simple things you'd want an AI to do (Personal Trainer, Chef, Movie Reco's etc...) - Now watch some free videos on something like ChatGPT prompting, and try to learn enough to make your fun simple AI tool, focusing on which style of learning helped you the most. Now you're ready to learn

There is no age for learning. You can learn new things daily from your surrounding. At this time you should concentrate on your profile and search for new updates and courses. While searching job you can upskill yourself, so that it will keep you ahead from everyone. This learnings will also boost your confidence double.

GRACE... The first part is the most important for me - show yourself some grace! I have been laid-off a few times, and we can be really hard on ourselves. Remember that even though it is very personal for you, it is not personal. JOURNAL... While it is important to be consistent in the search documenting activity, it's also important to build in reflection time. At this time of transition, it's possible you might want to do something different. Keep a journal - write in it consistently (daily is good). Record what you're grateful for (+mindset), and walk yourself through those things that bring you the most joy. Can you get (or create) work that involves something along those lines? Looking back once you're on the other side will be cool.

Start by reflecting on your core, whether what you were doing was exactly what made you shine, what made you enter the flow that brings you happiness. Naturally, we mold ourselves a bit according to the company's strategy changes along the way. These small doses of self-adaptation can be positive and bring new experiences. However, they can also take you away from what you love to do. Having this self-knowledge is the first big reflection that needs to be done. And always: be kind to yourself :)

+Reflect on your skill set (some new, some old). +to really fully take in what your experience was, and how it may have changed now compared to then, and what you expect to get from this next experience and none of what you don't want. +having a solid gameplan on how you're gonna spend the layoff time, how much of that time is dedicated to you(should be to byou anyway) and how much of that time is dedicated to adding to your repertoire with job searches, resume updating, and imposing creative ventures and expenditures to your career front. After all, work should be fun (for you). +Reminding yourself what you're just naturally good at/love doing freely, and pursuing that.

Be nice to yourself. Remember, this is not permanent. If you need some help, try writing down everything so you can keep everything in perspective.

Everyone's circumstances of being laid off are different so, you have to go through all your emotions without being judgmental towards yourself, and one of the worst things you can do is beat yourself up. It wasn't personal no matter how much it felt like it.

While all the other categories are important and great advice, I cannot stress enough the importance of self-care. Eat well, get enough sleep, take walks, exercise, don’t neglect the things that bring you peace and joy….and while you are in self-care mode, ask yourself if you are presenting yourself as the go-getter you need to be in a successful job search. What do I mean by this? Project confidence in your posture and smile, update your hair and make up if you need to, go into learning mode, and remind yourself often that losing a job does not diminish you as a valuable and beautiful person.

Think beyond the guardrails of your current role. One of the best things I ever did for my career was walk away from it for a period of time. I worked completely outside my “industry”-and it gave me perspective I never would have gained otherwise. I took a pay cut. The stress level dropped to nearly zero. I had fun at work. I practiced skillsets that weren’t “necesssary” in my former roles, but sure enough, a job within my wheelhouse came around after a while and wow, did those skillsets serve me! I am not confined anymore. Making less money was better than no money, and I benefitted immensely from the shift in mindset. Job searching is hard, and exhausting. Give yourself some grace. You might surprise yourself in totally new ways!
