Here's how you can learn from failure in your career.

I know it’s a cliche, but the term “failure” itself doesn’t work for me. You either win, or learn. That said, if you continue to repeat the same mistakes .., uh, that’s on you. Additionally, YOU are not a failure, you just tried something that ended up not working. Millions of mistakes are made every day, ultimately narrowing the scope of possibilities that may be your breakthrough. There are certainly fails that hurt more than others. If you analyze the inputs you can make the adjustments necessary to forge the path to progress. Was the “vision” clear, or blurry? Was the “path” the best choice, or are others better? Are the leader and/or team sub-optimal? Did you use the right execution model? Analyze the inputs to change the output.

Seek feedback from mentors and colleagues to gain different perspectives and insights. Use this knowledge to adjust your approach and strategies moving forward. Remember, resilience is key—view each failure as a stepping stone toward success and a chance to develop a deeper understanding of your strengths and areas for improvement.

A previous role taught me the importance of stakeholder engagement. I unintentionally limited my growth by isolating myself, creating a self-imposed ceiling. Recognising this as a setback, I shifted my mindset in my current role to prioritise building strong relationships across departments. This newfound approach has accelerated my learning curve, enhanced my performance, and fostered valuable collaborations.

While working in MRI, I've encountered situations where a claustrophobic patient causes motion artifacts, requiring a return visit. These instances provide valuable learning experiences. Similar challenges arise in other patient care scenarios, such as administering treatment to non-compliant patients, managing unexpected reactions, or handling communication breakdowns. Instead of ignoring setbacks or succumbing to self-doubt, acknowledge your emotions—disappointment, frustration. Recognize these feelings as natural responses to unmet expectations. By accepting failure as part of the learning process, you pave the way for constructive analysis and personal development, ensuring continuous improvement in patient care.

It's natural to be emotional after failures. However, it is important to put the logical hat on, to review what has happened and what could be done next. It will help us to re-balance our emotions so we don't get overwhelmed with negative emotions and fall into depression.

"Lesson repeats itself until you learn from it" Failures are okay as long as you learn, and reflect on them. Learn from your failures, stop blaming others, take responsibility and work on yourself. Unfortunately, some people keep blaming others or the environment when they fail. Try to focus on what you can change (mostly, yourself, your actions) instead of focusing on external forces that you cannot control.

Feedback can be a great tool for improvement and growth. When you are open to feedbacks, you should be open to negative and positive feedbacks. However, it really matters where it is is coming from. A lot of people around you could be experienced, but not everyone has the ability to give you the correct feedback. After a failure, it is human nature to figure out, what could have been done better. Self- awareness helps you make that judgement. Because, a lot of time failure can lower your self-confidence. At that time you need encouragement more than negative feedbacks and remember, nobody except YOU can figure out what could have been done better, all you are looking for is what could have been done differently. After learning from our own analysis, and also getting feedback from trusted friends and mentors, we may want to review and see what strategies we may take up for the next move. It may take a while to upskill and apply the new strategies. So, do not be hasty, take your time. The right opportunity will come.

It is helpful to reframe failure as a time to learn instead of a time when things didn't work out. Lots of things don't work out all the time, but you can still learn and grow. By making this reframe, you will become more resilient when failure occurs because you will know that it's okay to be disappointed it didn't work out and you'll be able to find the lessons to learn.

Failing is a part and parcel of life, especially when dealing with bigger challenges and greater rewards. It's nothing personal; it's just a learning opportunity to grow and be better. If we see failure with the right perspective, we will be able to bounce back from failures more easily. It's like a rubber ball that does not break; when it lands on the ground, it will bounce back up. Be like a rubber ball.

Este es un aspecto fundamental en la vida, no todo saldrá bien o como planeamos, podemos cometer errores y eso es normal Lo importante es aprender de ellos y seguir adelante, vendrán nuevas oportunidades que debemos aprovechar y par eso debemos preparados y recuperar la confianza. Everyone fails at some point, and that's perfectly normal. Mistakes won’t ruin your reputation or career as long as you learn from them. Seek feedback from mentors and colleagues for fresh perspectives. Use this feedback to develop actionable steps and new strategies. Keep a record of lessons learned to avoid repeating mistakes. Remember, failure is part of the journey. Embrace it, learn from it, and let it propel you toward success.

What happened after we met with failure? After some moping around and getting upset about it, we reviewed what had happened. After reviewing, we need to think deeply about it and try to learn from the lessons drawn from the failure. Without reflection, we may repeat the same mistakes again and again. We must reflect and take action to improve the mistakes if they are within our control. If it's not within our control, we must learn to accept it and work towards working on things within our control.

When we fail, we might be too strict, too rude with ourselves. But, would you act the same way with a friend who failed at something? Most of the time, the answer is "no", meaning that we don't show ourselves the compassion we show to others. Take some time and reflect on this.

I said to someone doing one of the coaching sessions. Learning from failure is like turning lemons into lemonade. Every setback is an opportunity to refine your skills and strategies. You should embrace failure as a teacher rather than a barrier or hurdles. Analyze what went wrong, understand the lessons, and adapt your approach. Remember, “The only real mistake is the one from which we learn nothing.” By reflecting on your experiences, you gain resilience and insight, which will ultimately guide you toward greater success.

When dealing with failure, take these steps: 1) Define failure for yourself. One person's definition is not gospel and is based on their perspectives. 2) What can you learn from your misstep? Did you learn something new? What to do or not to do? 3) Breathe. Give yourself grace. Everyone makes mistakes. It's not the end of the world. 4) If apologies are necessary, make them with your head up.
