Be sure to set up your accounting in the correct way. Even if your business structure is a Sole Proprietorship the IRS does not want you to co-mingle business and personal income and expenses. As "John Smith" you can register your business as John Smith Productions and open a business bank account in that name, and get a VISA debit card for it. That being said, as Kevin already mentioned - You can get a lot out of stock cameras and even many high-end mobile phones can now shoot fairly decent video for projects that don't require the look of a more robust, professional camera. Same goes for video and audio editing after your shoots. Adobe might be industry standard for most cases, but there are plenty of less expensive alternatives that offer the same level of power.
