To launch a freelance career in Entertainment (Btw there isn’t any another kind!) you have to understand the process of the entire filmmaking process and if you want to be a producer, you need to know everyone’s job (which takes time to learn), be willing to do anything and everything needed and be a problem solver! Filmmaking is always a race against time (every day!) to get what is needed on the hard drive (not as much fun to say as “in the can). Now if you are a crew member being knowledgeable, handy, personable and willing to go above and beyond the call of duty helps. All of this only works if there are productions to work on! Good luck as timing, persistence and tenacity are everything!

When I got my first big freelance gig, the client had a small budget and wasn't sure about hiring me. I added some free social media clips to sweeten the deal and made sure to deliver an awesome video. They loved it and recommended me to others. This taught me that going the extra mile and being friendly can really pay off.

And still they announced that their films are ethical and worth watching. Is that right? Not at all. Today's films have no ethics. Only craziness of actions and speed, drama that no longer have it's after effect on the audiences

Theory is needed and hands on is a must! What you learn will help you to apply for production. And best part is every projects will vary in production size and budget. And there is where all the challenges and learning really matters!

To launch a freelance career in entertainment is entirely a networking existence. Your network is where all of the jobs come from. But when you are on a movie or television show, impress anyone and everyone with the job you do and the person you are - they will be your best sales people for you to get the next gig. Be kind, thankful and grateful. And write hand written thank you notes to those that hired you! It makes a difference in the world of easy emails and texts.

Being genuine and supportive in my interactions has helped me build strong, reciprocal relationships that continue to benefit my career.

Genuine... I take it as a synonym for honesty in work! Network passionately if you really love what you do! And you will find jobs with the right teams!

In the entertainment business, your portfolio (also known as credits) is your calling card, business card, etc. That doesn’t mean that the final product has to be good or make a ton of money but what you did on that product needs to stand out and be exemplary - because that’s what will get you hired again and again. Make sure that what you do is done on time and under budget and done with a smile and a can do attitude and you will get hired again and again.

As a freelancer, managing finances is crucial. I keep accurate records of my income and expenses to make tax time easier and use a separate bank account for business transactions to keep things organized. I’ve also learned about tax deductions for freelancers in film production, like equipment purchases and home office expenses, which helps me maximize my earnings.

This is part of networking which is part of marketing. Meet new people. Every week. Expand the people you know and that can hire you. Call them up and ask them to coffee (yes physically in person!!!) and talk about one of their accomplishments or projects in past and ask them how they accomplished this or that. People love to talk about themselves. Give them the room and the floor to do it! Be kind. Gracious. Grateful. Everyday! And most of all be capable, personable and easy to work with - that is the best marketing you can give yourself!
