It's not a secret that event work (especially corporate or sports) does not pay well until you've reached the senior leadership level, so it's likely that even with a full-time entry level events role you'll need something else to supplement your income. Connect with local staffing agencies and media production companies for easy one-off gigs like brand ambassador or production runner, and use those as networking opportunities! They can lead to repeat work and even long-term employment, plus they're a lot of fun.

Totally agree with all the points - I would maybe also add starting freelancing with local DMC companies - then you can work at once with several companies, so have better chances to experience wider range of events - from film festivals and concerts to medical conference in order to gain experience and choose future path.

You don't need to work for an event planner to get into event planning. The best event planners know the in's and out's of a variety of different vendors and the best way to gain that knowledge is by dabbling in working with a variety of different companies. Audiovisual, catering, venues... all different areas to consider gaining experience in before diving right into event planning.
