Pretty sure you are missing #7 - Culture of Innovation. You shouldn't need to update your team, your team should update you. This requires enablement and time commitment for innovation via discovery and test and learn approaches. You never know where the next great idea for your organization will come from, so nurture it from the inside.

Encouraging participation in online courses and tech conferences broadens our horizons. I also use platforms like Slack to share articles and resources. By dedicating time in our weekly meetings to discuss innovations, I ensure everyone stays informed and engaged. Lastly, I create an environment where team members feel comfortable experimenting with new technologies in their projects.

Having a dedicated, experienced mentor can be a game-changer for engineers looking to overcome personal career or skill development hurdles. A mentor can provide guidance, support, and hands-on expertise to help engineers navigate their professional journey.

Practice is very important in learning new technologies. So it is important to encourage your team to apply new knowledge in projects that you are already working on. Do code reviews and encourage team members to come up with ideas for improving it. This is truly a great opportunity for the team to learn by doing while working, and stay up to date with the latest trends and technologies in your software products.

Controversial opinion: this is an illusion, and most likely a waste of time. Your team will invariably prioritise “work” over projects, and the scrutiny to make sure it’s useful will stifle the innovation you seek. Instead: 1. Encourage the adoption of new tech as something your teams “just” do as part of their work. Think about how to make it safe to try, rather than emphasise what could go wrong. 2. Put guardrails in place to avoid cost surprises from rogue cloud experiments after a spike. 3. Foster critical thinking and decision making based on evidence, at the right level (hint: that’s _not_ having your CTO sign off on every tech choice). 4. Hackday projects can help too - but beware the “let’s get this into Production” trap!

I highly recommend pursuing personal engineering projects as a means to unlock new skill levels but keep it PERSONAL. Inviting too many uncessary opinions, will eventually hinder progress. Benefits: Autonomy and Flexibility: Can pick own challenge and focus on areas that genuinely interest and motivate you. Ambiguity and Dynamic Environment: Develop problem-solving skills, adaptability, and resilience in a dynamic and uncertain environment. No Pressure of Dogma and Standardization: Experiment, innovate, and push boundaries without the constraints of established protocols and procedures.
