From these sketches, I build a robust framework for my digital creations, ensuring high-impact results.

From Paper to Pixel: The Power of Sketching For graphic designers, the humble pencil and paper remain a powerful tool. Sketching offers a liberating first step, allowing for rapid exploration of ideas without software limitations. This tactile approach fosters out-of-the-box thinking, leading to innovative concepts. Sketches can explore various layouts, perspectives, and styles before transitioning to the digital realm. It's a low-fidelity method that unlocks high-impact results, laying a strong foundation for your digital creations.

I always start new projects with sketching. Sometimes that’s sketching out a sort of map or schema of a project with several different elements (to understand how they all fit together or relate to each other, for example). Other times it might be thumbnails to get a sense of image composition and content. But I typically include scribbled text as well as sketchy graphics or shapes too - even as a visual thinker I find annotating really useful. My future self always appreciates these notes too, when I come back to a sketch. I agree that sketching can take multiple forms too - pen & paper, iPad & procreate, or even something like Miro. Whatever works to get the thinking on a page!

Some individuals would rather start the task and discover as they go along. But this can often result in backtracking or starting again. This takes up time. This drawback will have different weights based on you personally or if 'time is money'.

One thing I have found helpful is keeping a digital mood board or inspiration folder to collect visuals that spark creativity. Actually, I disagree with solely relying on existing designs or trends without injecting your unique perspective. An example I have seen is a designer drawing inspiration from street graffiti to create dynamic and edgy textures for a digital artwork, adding a distinct flair to the final product.

I find, if I have been too fixated on ploughing through work, that my inspiration well starts to run dry. Looking outside of this is essential to keep that topped up - for me that could be anything from visiting galleries or museums, to watching movies, listening to music through to being out and about, people-watching. Absorbing other creatives’ work inspires and challenges me to think big and lean into the abstract, while observing life and nature helps keep me grounded and aware of what’s happening around me.

Inspiration is everywhere, waiting to be discovered. Sometimes, letting go of preconceptions and ego is key to clear thinking and finding that spark of creativity. It's about opening your mind to new experiences and allowing yourself to be influenced by the world around you.

It's good to passively gather inspiration (photos, sketches, writing down thoughts, etc.) even if you're not actively working on a project. It helps you get a better picture of what resonates with you. When gathering inspiration for projects, it might even help you think of new things. It helps to avoid stagnation. I would avoid AI tools for this process because you don't know what the data set has been trained on. You're limiting yourself.

Inspiration lies everywhere you just have to look for it. Inspiration comes from observing your surroundings and from other people. For me, most of my inspiration comes from what I have experienced and by observing other people work as well.

By experimenting with different techniques, mediums, and functions of your software you can dig up new ideas that didn't come to mind when you first took on the project. Sometimes even the ugliest of sketches can present and idea that will carry the final project. Create as many iterations as possible and save them all for future inspiration.

Experimentation is one of the best ways to grow your skills and discover what's possible with the tools you have available. For this, you need to give yourself permission to feel playful or curious.

Agreed. I use procreate for this reason. It gives me the freedom to explore more artistic abilities without worrying about making errors. Transitioning from the software I use to use was daunting..but I think anything unknown, and new can be. But as I quickly learned the ins and outs of procreate, I definitely noticed a shift In My design process, resulting in high quality graphics.

Absolutely, I resonate with that sentiment. I recall a time when all I had was a smartphone and a battered laptop. Despite the limitations, I began honing my skills, using just my Android phone, literally using my phone and a finger to draw. It wasn't about the tools' cost but rather the commitment. As projects trickled in, I gradually upgraded my tools, enhancing my capabilities along the way. This experience taught me that mastery isn't about the price tag but rather the dedication to continuous improvement, regardless of the resources at hand.

Mastering your tools does equip you to "streamline your workflow", but also equips you with the knowledge of how to troubleshoot problems. Mistakes happen and so does the feeling of fighting with your tools. By having knowledge of your tools, you can minimise the occurrence and impact. Also, with a greater knowledge of your tools, you can be equipped with the confidence to be more ambitious.

Collaboration is a really nice way to explore your idea and sharing different perspectives. Whenever I get an opportunity to collaborate, I just straightforward say YES to it. As an artist I think it really helps you to grow.

Collaboration works best when each party ‘owns’ some distinct territory, skill or discipline area. Otherwise it can lead to a spiral of compromise.

There's an expression of "rising tides lift all ships" or something of that nature. There's such value in sharing learned knowledge and supporting each other. Unfortunately, the capitalist system creates barriers to this.

In my experience it’s good to remember that creativity thrives on diverse perspectives. Collaborating with others not only introduces new ideas and techniques but also provides valuable feedback that can refine and enhance your work.

Sometimes I felt stuck,I felt left behind,or nothing's good is come. I'll look at my old drawings,designs and compare it with my recent works. Sometimes,I do a redraw or redesign. After that,I finally feel that I'm in progressing growth,maybe still not the point I want to reach,but I have a progress,I'm better than before. That's what's more important to ourselves.
