Same way, don't allow duplicate entries in a table (unless that's what you wanted). All these basic checks makes sure the data in your DB is in tip top shape and ready to rock and roll.

Default size and conditions will work well for your sample projects. When it comes to actual application Database, keep in mind that you are going to get boat loads of data. Think ahead for next 3-5 years and design the database. Keep the design flexible for additions, changes and data growth. Plan for regular backup and archival of data (when that is an option), rebuild indexes based on the velocity of data change/additions, partition tables (break down table data into manageable chunks based on date of transaction for example) and consider Big Data database when you believe you have got more data and get more mileage out of your huge data set for insights.
