Empathy is first and foremost requirement in any role. Be it Father, CEO, President, Mother anything. It makes difference to anything and everything on the planet. A small anecdote to explain - I was so reserved and shy when I started my career and due to that could not do much to help our family business grow bigger. But it was my brother who kept faith in me. As and when there was a chance my brother pushed me to learn how to grow in business. He managed to spend lot of money even though it was not affordable. That journey turned my personality and I got learning habit. Today we are serving to 5 nations with our software products. We belong to small town but today we are present in 3 tier one cities. So, empathy is the key to success.

As Stephen Covey once said: "Most people do not listen with the intent to understand; they listen with the intent to reply." When networking we usually want to make a good impression by showing how clever and interesting we are. But when we notice this urge to show off, it might be more useful to take a deep breath and let go of it. Then we can focus on listening to the other person and make them feel clever and interesting. People won't always remember what you've said, anyway. But they will remember how you've made them feel.
