Make a conscious effort to attend workshops, obtain the necessary qualifications, and read trade journals. This proactive attitude not only makes an impression on superiors but also gives you the state-of-the-art knowledge and abilities to successfully handle new issues as they arise. If you adopt a growth-oriented, optimistic mindset, you will surely make a lasting impact on your superiors and colleagues.

Learning or improving your skills to impress others should not be the goal. Never shy away from the fear of making mistakes. This will help you to venture into critical projects, different project standards and specifications. This will add variety to your experience. No matter how many certificates you add to your resume, you learn only by applying your knowledge to real world problems. Often this may lead to fundamental mistakes but growth comes when one is out of their comfort zone. You may solve some problems or fail in some. The key is in trying, continuous learning, improving skills and knowledge. Accolades and respect will automatically follow.

Forget all that high level theory BS. You learn to do big things by mastering small things. There is no substitute for experience and you need to start at the BOTTOM. Learning the smallest details of how things are put together and how they work. By understanding how small things are put together it will help you establish common plant spacings like elevations of piperacks and spacial relationships of varying equipment

To start with... Stop thinking of your seniors or your colleagues or anyone... Only thing of putting yourself in the shoes of the worker/labour who is actually/physically working on ground With no double I can be sure that whoever is reading this is privileged enough to be managing the ground level workers who actually deal with the plant issues first handed... Understand what is to be automated and what is to be left to the expertise of the Operator and work on easing their trouble points... I can't assure you of you impress your bosses but u'll surely sleep peacefully... U'll satisfy your conscience...

Proactiveness gives a good impression on how zealous an operator is towards learning , as this can lead to trust in giving more task which might lead to personal development, so learning and bracing up in plant operations/engineering principles will bridge a lot of gap in skill sets. Knowing the basis and principles on which equipments and processes are designed and running will simplify any difficult faced in operations and helps in qualitative reasoning in plant problem solving skills which will surely lead to recognition by supervisors or line managers.

Be careful of using technology for the sake of using technology because you think it makes you look smart. Do not use technology before its time. Sometime it may make more sense to use a pencil and sketch pad. I've seen many cases in the field where this is true. Make sure the technology is seasoned and proven before you jump in to using it....unless you are a developer or beta test center. Impress me by getting the job done the quickest, cheapest, and best quality...the three legs of the stool (quality, price, schedule)

Communication gap have lead to so many information lost and misinterpretation by non-technical personnel’s, sharing plant operation information needs to be off operational jargons as a financial manager or a sales representative might not be able to comprehend what a process personnel understands, clarity in speech and context matters in disseminating data’s and information across in an organization.

Yes, stay tuned in and connected with others in your industry. However DO NOT obtain certifications just to hang them on your wall. Big deal. I dont care about your certifications. You can either do the job I hire you for or you cant. Your certification means nothing to me. I cant bill my client extra because you have a certification. I can, however, bill my client if you perform better than the agreed project conditions.
