The following points have helped me to improve my EI: 1) If something bothers me, then I don't just get annoyed about. I ask myself concretely, what exactly bothers me about it? Have I experienced something similar in my past – and if so, how did I deal with it? Through this analysis, I go into the "meta" level, which supports me in dealing with the situation constructively. 2) Real motivation comes from intrinsic motivation. To do this, I have to be clear about what I really want. This clarity is an important basis for self-confidence, and thus also motivation. 3) If I don't get along with a person right away, then I ask myself what can I learn from this person? This creates a new perspective and often also better access to these people.

When a teammate shares a frustration, share one that you have experienced and perhaps how you overcame it in a positive manner.

For me, it is important to promote the problem-solving skills of my employees. If someone comes to me to tell me that something doesn't work, I congratulate him for finding a mistake, but I don't continue the conversation until he comes up with at least one suggested solution to solve the problem.

I used to struggle with the fact that I am virtually infallible as a leader and manager. As a result, I often worked under very strong pressure and my employees felt that they were not allowed to make any mistakes either. It was only when I learned to make mistakes and to stand by them that the situation became much easier and more relaxed for everyone (and especially for me). I can only recommend every leader/manager to allow mistakes (especially in themselves) and to learn and grow from them.

This can strengthen relationships and improve collaboration across departments.
