Here's how you can harness confidence to lead a successful Live Events project.

Building trust with those around you takes time and attention but has the benefit of paying dividends when new events, opportunities, and projects arise. With an audience this can be as simple as starting on time, and delivering the type of event that was advertised while being engaging. With your team, vendors, and other stakeholders this is more about making sure everyone is prepared and feels like they are supported enough to do their best work in the moment. This can be done with clear and simple communication, scheduling, making sure expectations are realistic and consistent, and providing support when things do not go according to plan.

Trust comes from your ability to show your organization that you are one of them. Jobs should be earned and not given. Trust comes from trusting your employees to do their job. Trust is established when employees providing their best equals receiving the best. A good leader is approachable and has a sense of fairness and equity within the organization. Many leaders today, favor lesser employees and lose the trust of the good workers as a result.

Trust comes from two things: the quality of your relationship and the belief in their competence. Thank you to Ken Shields for this simple, accurate way of looking at trust. I think we over complicate trust. You can’t have trust, especially when the heat is on, without these two elements.

Confidence is crucial when leading a professional event. It's imperative to be both planful and confident to ensure the audience values your expert advice and suggestions. Being well-versed in every aspect of the event, from logistics to the schedule, enables you to make informed decisions swiftly and effectively. This level of preparedness not only helps you handle any situation that arises but also reassures your audience that you are in control and an expert in the field. I think it is important to understand your responsibilities. When participating in events others organize, I remind myself that I am not in control. However, for my events, I am well-versed in every detail, from logistics to guest mgt. This is not difficult or time-consuming. Start at the beginning, stay engaged throughout the process, set up templates for your team, and ask questions as needed. Consider contingency plans for potential issues. My confidence during live events stems from my preparedness. I have plans A, B, and C ready to go. I am familiar with every topic and presenter, allowing me to adjust if someone is late. I can also address attendee questions, even if my response is, "Great question, I'll find out for you."

That is very true. You have to be very clear with what you want from your team and not to expect them to know what to do without telling them. Otherwise your team will be confused and will hinder you from achieving your goals.

Adapting quickly is key, but adapting while staying aligned to core principles is what great leaders do. Some leaders “over adapt”. They hang their hat on their ability change, but don’t remain accountable to core principles.

Adaptation is very important character of a good leader. To be flexible means you know how to act quickly in some difficult situation You will be able to handle things confidently which help your team in helping you and not panicking.

Live events are all about the people and the experience. If you’re leading the project, you likely have prior experience working on live events. Leverage that experience—reflect on what worked well and what didn’t. Be clear on the desired outcome, and be ready to pivot both in both the planning stage and during the event itself. To increase your chances of success, surround yourself with a reliable, trustworthy team. Delegate tasks based on skills and experience; it’s essential to know your team can deliver.
