Here's how you can handle conflicts of interest with your boss in the Creator Economy.

It's always a good idea to keep track of what you have done in terms of work scope - from the start so that you have on record everything you have done. Any conflict can be sorted as long as you have a communication channel and can have a dialogue. The work records you have maintained would undoubtedly be helpful towards explaining your side of the story.

I threw all of that away to take on an organisation in a fight that I could never win. With any conflict it's best to take a step back and look at long term outcomes. This bump in the road will pass. Sound out the views of people you trust and be willing to compromise. That way you won't do what I did and sabotage your job, your home and your mental health.

The conflict of interest occurred after some event or some business activities, not in compliance with the company culture. Is it the boss that is out of compliance with company policy and procedure? Or does the company need revision of customer wants, needs and desires ? We will address the above questions to identify the issues at hand. Just don’t do it. It says something about honesty and respect for others. If there is conflict, it should not happen. It’s like cheating someone. Do you need to? I doubt it. You can make time on your own time.

In my experience on both sides of identifying and then discussing how to manage potential conflicts, its important to set a formal meeting, be prepared with notes, a clear description of the potential conflicts and some options for how you understand it can be resolved. In addition, it's critical that you actively listen to your boss/employee's view and perspective. Then discuss the possible scenarios/outcomes, who is going to action what and the timeframe for reconvening to discuss/present the outcome of the agreed actions. Typically, one discussion is not sufficient. Follow through on both sides is essential. AND...if the conflict can't be resolved there needs to be clarity as to what the next steps are.

One thing I found helpful was to establish where there is communication breakdown. I set an achievable short goal/task that has a timeframe and a tangible result with clear expectations. Come to the next sit down with something new to explore together.

Going into such a situation requires understanding what the issues are. Be prepared with notes, statistics and any materials needed to start resolving conflicts.

Trust is the essential ingredient of every relationship - especially work and family. Love comes and goes, and a lost love can be renewed or revived. But once you lose trust, it's nearly impossible to regain it. So if there is a potential conflict or obstacle, it's better to address it early while the trust levels are healthiest.

Trust is crucial! Building trust is being open, honest and forthcoming. Be open to other perspectives. Be honest in sharing yours. Be forthcoming with what direction you're moving.
