Some effective ways to resolve such conflicts are to Identify the core issues and acknowledge different perspectives. Try and align on common goals and objectives. Work on developing a collaborative workflow and by fostering a culture of open communication, mutual respect, and collaboration, you can effectively manage and resolve conflicts between product managers and developers, leading to a more cohesive and productive team.

Understanding the distinct roles of product managers and developers is crucial for effective conflict resolution. From my experience, I've learned that product managers set the course like navigators, while developers execute the journey as the crew. Respecting each role's expertise fosters collaboration, emphasizing the common goal of a successful product aligned with user needs and business objectives.

It’s important to respect each other's ability and experience in their respective craft, particularly if you moved from one group to the other. PM’s who can articulate a validated ‘what’ and ‘why’ including the go-to-market intent to the Development team will often receive stronger buy-in and a more comprehensive ‘how’. PM’s who continually test, validate and communicate their ‘what’ and ‘why’ amidst changing customer, market and technology needs help maintain buy-in and momentum from the Dev team. Dev team members will often feel more empowered in identifying, addressing and communicating risks/issues and potential solutions by understanding the whole picture.

Effectively managing conflicts between PM and developers requires a clear understanding of each party's roles and responsibilities. PMs must have a clear vision of the product and market, focusing on user experience, customer needs, and business objectives. On the other hand, developers concentrate on the technical implementation, ensuring the product is functional and efficient. A recommended methodology for defining roles and responsibilities is using the RACI matrix (Responsible, Accountable, Consulted, Informed). This tool helps clarify who is responsible for each task, who has the authority to approve decisions, who should be consulted before making decisions, and who needs to be informed about progress.

Conflicts between product managers and developers may arise when developers do not know or understand these (4) things: First, the business and supporting product strategy is not communicated by a product manager. Second, what problems & needs a product is intended to solve for customers and value they will receive. Third, product manager does not depict product capabilities and features with the lens of solving problems/needs/pains for customers. Fourth, a product release plan and its supporting features are not prioritized in terms of the problem/need relevance to customers and measurable value to customers. In summary, customer-centric product innovation & all forms of release planning must reflect problem/need->value delivered.

Conflicts are good! Most importantly they tell that people care enough about the product to even put up a fight. Now, second part is understanding and resolving the conflict- Conflicts between product and engineering are predominantly on product features and timelines. It's important to understand and respect each other's role and constraints here. Product does define what to be built but it should consider feasibility and complexity from engineering and vice versa for other aspects. In my experience, it's an important action if you want to have a dynamic team with good outcomes. Structured meetings like 1on1 and retro are a good way to have good communication with team members but are not the only ways. Informal discussion is another good way to enhance the relationship between PM and tech teams and closer toghether and discussion in a friendly atmosphere without any hesitation. You should start it and don't wait for developers to start it.

It’s very important to have back and forth communication link between product manager /owner and the development team as the business gets due education on technical front. This communication while delivering a project is vital because it shows how the entire team as whole is aligned to products vision . If the product owner /manager understands the technical implications and development understand the importance of product and its vision, then it would lead to a harmonious understanding amongst the team to deliver a common goal .

Conflict resolutions methods within an organisation is crucial to resolve conflicts. Structured mmoderated meetings can be organised trying to analyse how each team is contributing to the problem and identy areas of improvements

For example, implementing regular "sync-up" meetings can ensure that both sides are aligned and any issues are addressed promptly.

A simpler and more applicable methodology for finding compromise solutions is the "Priority Circle" technique. In this approach, both product managers and developers list their priorities in a joint meeting. These lists are then compared and discussed, seeking common ground and areas where concessions can be made.

This might involve adjusting timelines, re-evaluating feature importance, or reallocating resources. Conflicts can be one of the best sources for personal growth and team development, it pushes us to rethink work approaches and indicates what is important for each team member. Sometimes it can become a reason for positive changes and improvements. In the long term, avoiding conflicts can create more harm for teams and businesses, rather than openly?discussing it, otherwise, unresolved and hidden issues can be presented in much more negative ways.

Mutual Respect. Highly underrated emotion that comes to play with transparency. Fact that either group (product managers and developers) don't come to a common goal means that there are hidden motives that do not help in long term relationship building. This means sharing the unstated goal and agenda to each other. And sharing these goals then determines how you are being transparent for building a long term relationship and thereby building mutual respect.

The goals for the developer and product manager may be the same but the process and perspectives vary. Understand each other's perspectives, communicate well.Be in a middle ground, open to the issues from the developers, ask and learn if you don't get the technical terms. Make them seen and heard. Find the root causes, try to put the data forward( intuition as well) and implement or fix the changes which are required.

It is crucial to understand the developers' point of view and identify their motivators. As a product manager, you should be a good listener and empathize with the developers. Most importantly, help them understand the business drivers and what generates revenue. In my opinion, many developers are primarily focused on cool technology and need guidance to understand what drives profitability for the organization and how their efficient and optimized work contributes to the company's bottom line.
