At first, I felt like this might have been a stretch, but in responding to the probability post I realized that this is essential in modeling and gathering sensor inputs or identifying variables we need to create a sensor to measure in order to accurately model the situational probabilities.

The usefulness of calculus might not be immediately apparent. This changes once one realises that in differential equations/integrals, time is usually the variable in question. For example, velocity is (d(x))/(dt) (the rate of change of position with respect to time), and distance is int(v(t)*dt). So why is time important? In most cases, computational analysis will be used to model the motion of the robot, which can help give us the equations of motion with respect to time. Once we have these equations, any future time can be inserted to predict the future state of the robot! This can potentially be done with any quantity which changes with time, hence making predictions easier and more accurate. The beauty of calculus!

An increasingly common example of this that most could relate to is robotic vacuums. Think of the many textures and surfaces they might contact. How does it recognize where the edge of a stair is vs a change from thick carpet to hardwood? How do we get it to distinguish between the rug to be cleaned and the toddler thrown dish towel that would clog it? There's endless possibilities so it's important to understand how to take the sensor input and predict the most probable situation. This can even come into identifying what sensors we need to have.
