1 Observe Body Language

Body language is a powerful indicator of your audience's engagement and can provide immediate feedback on your presentation's pacing. Look for signs such as nodding , which suggests agreement or understanding, versus crossed arms or frequent checking of watches , which may indicate impatience or disinterest. If you notice the latter, it might be time to pick up the pace or move on to a more engaging topic. Conversely, if the audience seems relaxed and attentive, your pacing is likely effective.

Your audience may be giving you non verbal feedback that isn't accurate. I occasionally cross my arms because my back may be bothering me (not because I'm uninterested or upset). If someone is nodding off, it could be that although your speech is going well, they did not get a good night's sleep. Microsoft PowerPoint Online (FREE By The Way!) includes Presenter Coach and in a drop down Body Language feedback! Recording yourself can be another way to observe the body language you are communicating non-verbally to your audience. Mike Moyers in his book "Pitch Ninja" has some great examples as well!

2 Ask Directly

Sometimes, the most straightforward way to receive feedback is to ask for it directly . At the end of your presentation, encourage your audience to share their thoughts on the pace. I have started incorporating a survey in my presentations (especially if I have time to make adjustments after receiving feedback). As a technical trainer, it's always better to get feedback early before you end the class with a survey and there's nothing you can adjust to meet certain requests or feedback students had!

PowerPoint automatically uses Presenter Mode and this gives the presenter total time, next slide and speaker notes on their screen while the audience just sees the slide! Super helpful if you have a time limit and no matter how much you practice, your speed and questions/tech or interruptions can significantly change the time you use vs the time you estimated in preparing!

In a group presentation setting, have a debrief meeting with your teammates. There are times when you will have to go off-script, need to reset timing expectations, and/or be ready to move to different sections of your presentation dynamically based on your audience's priority and level of engagement. You will have to make a decision in the moment based on your read of the room and go with it. When you debrief in a group setting, everyone might not agree with how things were managed in the moment and that is ok! Remember that you can only control your actions. Gather as much feedback as you can in an appropriate manner and use it to grow and make your next presentation even better.

6 Review Recordings

If possible, record your presentations and watch them afterward . Observing yourself can reveal habits and pacing issues that you might not be aware of while presenting. Pay attention to transitions between topics and how well you stick to your planned timing. Listening to your speech patterns, pauses, and audience reactions will give you a comprehensive understanding of your pacing and where you can improve.
