Chose wisely when you select a reference, do not just put their name and contact information down without informing them and assuming they will speak positively on your behalf! As a recruiter I've been on the receiving end of collecting references that have not always been informed or felt caught off guard. At this point, you already put so much effort into interviewing and landing the job! Make sure that you are keeping your reference informed and that they are ready to speak about your experience in detail and highlight the positives. Job seekers would be surprised how often references don't always come back favorable!

When you reach out to job references, this is a great opportunity to strengthen your relationship and make sure they speak about you positively. If they are giving you short answers, and say "yes put me down" without describing what they would say about your experience, avoid using this person. Typically supervisors are the best references to use but you can also choose someone that you've developed a great relationship with you that you've worked closely with.

Reach out via email, phone, or in person, depending on your relationship. Respect their time and express gratitude for their willingness to assist. This approach sets a positive tone for the feedback exchange and shows that you value their input.
