Who's still doing showreels? It's me! Why, you don't even look for a job?! Well, first of all, i'm doing it for myself. It's like that page in your diary. Sums up what you did in the past and it's also great to see your progress over time. Even more important, i get so many applications from aspiring 3d artists without any portfolio or work samples attached to it. Makes me wonder, who even thinks about inviting or even hiring such a person? So, remember: put some effort in your portfolio and show off!

Speaking as a classic generalist 3d artist here, but yeah standing out for something specific is always great. And it's not impossible at all. As a generalist i'd say it's best to even have that speciality on top to make oyurself more versatile. If you're just a nerd in one skill, it's great, but at the same time is really limiting you to that, i.e. job search.

Don't forget 'bout Linkedin. It seems to me, my most engagement with other artists and possible future clients is best in here! Post regularly if you have some good content but don't spam people. It really helps growing your community.
