Volunteer for fundraising projects or internships to gain hands-on experience. Practice your skills by participating in smaller fundraising initiatives, gradually taking on more responsibility as you build confidence. Stay curious, be persistent, and continuously seek opportunities to learn and grow.

Reach out to your development officers/group and ask to meet with them, learn what interest there may be among prospective donors. Outline your top needs as a resource program. Share the needs list and a list of possible projects that a prospective donor could contribute to, so your development team can take that directly to donors they are meeting with. Development can be a valuable partner. In working with Development, you begin to learn about fundraising. They may also want to involve you directly, when they meet with prospective donors.

One thing I found helpful at the beginning was taking relevant courses in fundraising. There are several online options available, some even for free. These courses could help you understand key concepts like donor mapping, classification and diversification, engagement strategies and grant writing, which are crucial for a fundraiser. They also teach you how to create a detailed fundraising plan, covering setting goals to allocating resources. It's a good starting point that you can then combine with practical work experience.

Networking is vital in fundraising and can be improved with practice. Engage in community events, social meetings, and local interest groups. Libraries and United Way offices often host useful events. Organizations like Rotary Club and Toastmasters are great for meeting influential people. Effective networking involves building genuine relationships. The more connections you make before fundraising, the better your chances. People tend to support their friends' success. By networking actively and authentically, you lay a strong foundation for your fundraising efforts. My greatest success has been in raising funds with those in my social circles. As they see my engagement, they desire to become involved in the process and cause.
