Here's how you can gain architecture experience when transitioning from a different field.

To create a correct and basic architectural design, in the first step, it is essetial to learn the theoretical foundations and design principles and techniques through education in this field and participating in related courses ,workshops and seminars. But be aware that architecture is not only engineering or art. It includes a wide range of sciences such as history, culture, philosophy, aesthetics , etc . Therefore, constantly seek to learn, identify influential and important factors in designing and implementation, and to create unique designs, always try to keep yourself updated in all related fields.

To gain architecture experience when transitioning from a different field, focus on leveraging your existing skills in relevant ways. Participate in architecture-related online forums and discussion groups to learn from professionals. Attend architecture workshops, seminars, and industry events to stay updated on trends and techniques. Additionally, create a portfolio showcasing any related work, such as design or project management, to demonstrate your transferable skills to potential employers.

Architecture is a technical field. If someone finds their passion in this field and wish to pursue it formally, it's essential to gain some form of formal education to gather a deep understanding of basic principles and working techniques. As practicing architecture involves creative thinking, knowledge of advanced software , familiarity with sustainable principles and building techniques etc. by taking courses on enrolling in a part-time degree one can build a sound understanding of this field, given they have a strong underlying passion.

Architecture is a really intensive field, I am still wrapping up studies at a foundation level. There is so much learn and it is a commitment, one that require you to have passion for the field. In Africa is can be very political endeavor. Read lots of books but if you are a true Gen Z there are a lot content creators that discuss a vast array of topics. So do your research before you jump into this or test it out with a Higher Certificate in Architectural Technology this will also give a barebones experience of what the field is like and then from there you can decide if you really want to get into this crazy yet rewarding profession.

Networking is mandatory in any field, have engaging conversations with random people, you will be hard pressed to find Architects and Designers milling around in the wild. Not everyone has time but walking and talking with sincerity will go a long way. Random check ups when you get the contact ask questions for the most part and engage with their answers for 5 mins and if they allow the conversation to go further run with it but respect their time as well. That 5-10 mins of just drawing them out of their workspace will help them in ways you will never understand and you will land up getting a call back asking you questions. Remember everyone is dealing with something and an impactful 5 mins can be something changes their day. Be humane.

Volunteering is always a great. The thing you have to consider is that it is always a challenge due to various constraints so it is always good to medium to test your design toolset and further expand on said toolset. There is always a trickle down effect you may find some problem solving at "Grassroot" level projects may apply in the "Medium & High" level projects. Always take the chance to give back because in turn you land up gaining so much more. It also makes as a form of Continuous Learning. This further adds to your portfolio. It's great to work on massive projects with big budgets but there is something rewarding about improving society at all levels. That's why we initially got into this, right? To make society a little better?

The field of architecture is vast in technology. While transitioning from other roles to architecture the key difference is the breadth of technical and functional acumen. Architect role often requires to go a mile wide and an inch deep while other role like engineering requires to go mile deep and an inch wide knowledge required in technology landscape. As the tech landscape is constantly evolving, Continuous learning is key which ensures the architects stay updated with latest trends, tools, and best practices. This gives the ability to adapt to new challenges and technologies as it’s critical for an architect to keep up to date with the changes.

I worked with many of mentees on the their transition journey from different career track to Architecture career. The basic thing to consider while transitioning your career to Architecture track is analyzing your past / current work experiences and align with closest Architecture track. For example, you might have worked in Operations / configuration management team. This base experience will help you to transition to Platform Architect. Likewise, if you worked as developer, you can transition your career towards Application Architect. So, the base analysis of existing experience is the first step you must take to transition to architecture experience.
