So, the same tactics that make for effective working relationships, i.e. building a human-centered relationship also applies here. In addition to 1:1s you have with your team, encourage them to have 1:1s with each other. Get the team together in person for a few days each year. Host virtual coffee/happy hours. Most people hesitate having dialogue to avoid upsetting others. Having a deeper human connection can help overcome that barrier and help foster essential dialogues.

I also found it fun to have a weekly team meeting where everyone uses a silly filter form Google Meets - nothing like a talking potato to lighten up the meeting. Test out what works for your team and find something unique to your group.

This is important in person or virtual. Make sure your team is aligned on objectives continuously. Setting quarterly goals as a team and then individually helps make sure everyone is aligned. Check in on these goals in your weekly 1:1s (you are having those right?) and communicate any changes. Make sure all team members hear if their are changes, preferably together.

Celebrate small wins. Celebrate innovative ideas - even if they do not make it to the final presentation. Celebrate a learning. Anything that is progress should be celebrated. This increases your teams confidence and accelerates learning. This isn't about just giving out a trophy, it should be sincere. Often we wait until big milestones and goals are done to celebrate but a LOT of work happens in between and teams can begin to feel unappreciated (even if they don't say it). And big milestones are often celebrated as a team, instead of the individual efforts. So make an effort to find small wins to celebrate each week.

I was fortunate enough to be a part of a team that loved learning and sharing. It was beautiful and fun! In the weekly team meeting, not only did we share our task updates & questions, often a team member would bring up a new thing they learned about the tool they were using, industry news, or just something fun in general. The team could use those insights going forward and it created an atmosphere that felt more like friends talking than a boring status report we just want to get over with. Try asking in your next meeting "Did anyone learn anything interesting this week?"
