Empathy as a leadership skill involves the ability to understand and share the feelings and perspectives of others. It enables leaders to connect with their team members on a deeper level, fostering trust, collaboration, and a supportive work environment. Key aspects of empathetic leadership include active listening; but more importantly the acceptance that another input regarding the issue at hand may strengthen the overall team response.

Empathy for me is respecting others circumstances and their struggles and reactions to those and realizing whatever the other person is going through is difficult for them and they are dealing with it as best they can.

Understanding your biases and cultural filters is essential when communicating with a diverse team. Continuously self-reflect to acknowledge how your background shapes your perceptions and interactions. This self-awareness enables you to approach conversations with sensitivity and adjust your communication style to accommodate diverse team members' needs. By doing so, you reduce misunderstandings and cultivate a culture of respect and inclusivity. Embracing this approach not only strengthens team dynamics but also demonstrates your commitment to effective communication and fostering a supportive work environment for everyone.

There are a number of ways to create a safe space for people to realize leadership desires to hear their views. Have a new team member share something about their culture or a learning experience from their youth. Get new members of a team comfortable sharing with their teammates. You can also start a weekly meeting with asking team members to share something they are grateful for. It might feel a little awkward at first but when I've done this in the past people really appreciate the opportunity and it starts a meeting off with a very positive vibe.
