Here's how you can foster adaptability in your social impact work.

I love asking for help and getting general feedback. I had some challenges getting volunteers involved in projects. I spoke to a colleague and he gave me an idea. The idea was to create a committee and assign task. The impact has been great and now the volunteer engagement has already exceeded last year.

We talk a lot about "embracing change," as though it's something we can turn on and off, or a skill we can access at a moment's notice. Instead, I like to think about building a Change Practice - we can work together to build a sustainable practice that will help us build and strenghten our change-related muscles when the time to "let go of old strategies and be open to new ideas" actually comes. With an established practice, we're less likely to let shame and urgency take over when we're in the thick of change and uncertainty. This requires time, patience, and understanding how we'll actually learn and adapt together (and being honest when we don't have the capacity to implement changes based on feedback).

One thing I have found helpful is LinkedIn. Being active and connecting with people in the impact space helps a lot. I get to see new project, approaches, ideas and better ways of implementing impact focused initiatives. For example, I was inspired by a post on what MTN Nigeria is doing in respect to volunteering and this has given me new ideas.

Analysis paralysis is real. Sometimes taking small incremental action steps keeps the momentum going and breaks down the process to accomplishable tasks.

1. Regular Check-Ins: Take time to review your projects and ask yourself and your team "What's working?" and "What can be improved?". This helps you course-correct and stay on track. 2. Solo or Group Reflection: Reflecting can be done alone or with others. Both ways are valuable! Talking to your team or community members can bring in fresh ideas.

Many organizations miss out on learning because they're trying to get it "right." Using lean, informal reflective practices can help teams get used to working out loud and learning together—complicated frameworks and brand new processes can be intimidating, especially when they're piled on top of already-full-plates. Consider starting with simple reflections. I like "aha": what's surprising/what didn't we know? | "of course": what isn't surprising/what did we think would happen? | "what about": what open or new questions do we have? Leaders should also examine whether their work culture leands itself to folks sharing half-baked thoughts (an "open door policy" isn't enough!) Perfectionism and shame get in the way of shared learning!
