Here's how you can format your resume using best practices.

Keep it simple. Start with a Word document, I like to use Calibri 10-12 font size (don't use anything smaller than 10). Have a clear summary section, top 10-12 skills, add a technical skills section if applicable, list your experience section, education/training/certifications section, and any additional RELEVANT sections like publications or volunteer work. The content is more important than anything else, but make sure to not use graphs or charts as the information will not parse properly onto the Applicant Tracking System (ATS). 2-3 pages in length is good (depending on years of experience and industry), anything longer may get passed over by recruiters/hiring managers. Lastly, tailor your resume to the job description. Good luck!

Basic is best. No columns or fancy graphics. Too hard to consume, digitally or otherwise. Then think of the content as a un upside-down triangle. Short professional summary including your top 2/3 achievements from the last few years. Then your experience in reverse chronological order with the most emphasis on your last two jobs and decreasing emphasis on older roles. Education and certifications last, unless you are a relatively new graduate.

To impress employers, format your resume effectively. Use a professional font, consistent formats, and section headings. Bullet points and keywords enhance readability. Keep it concise, proofread meticulously, and use a modern design. Tailor your resume to each job application.

Avoid clutter and excessive design elements. For instance, if you are a marketing manager, choose a modern resume template with clear section headings, bullet points, and ample white space, making it easy for hiring managers to scan her qualifications quickly. Use professional fonts like Arial, Calibri, or Times New Roman, and keep the font size between 10-12 points. This creates a cohesive look and improves readability.

Always use numbers when highlighting your achievements. They are more impactful and give people a better understanding of the extent of your contributions. For example, saying that you boosted sales by 35% is much more precise and impactful than saying "increases sales significantly."

Now we're talking, your summary section is like a hand shake. It is your first impression. Do you want firm handshake or a weak one? I'm just a small person, but I am going to squeeze your hand so you remember me (HA). Instead of writing a generic summary, write one that the hiring manager will remember. Be SPECIFIC. I mean, details people. Percentages and numbers that tell a story. How could you step in and immediately impact the position?

In my experience, candidates don’t pay enough attention to the summary section which happens to be the first impression, along with the compelling title and headline that should go under your name. This is your chance to make a strong introduction about your experience highlights and most relevant skills. The tone should be upbeat and the language should be persuasive. I do not recommend using weak words like “aspiring”, “seeking”, etc - implying that you are not “there” yet. Rather, you should market yourself in a way that shows you already are qualified and geared for those desired jobs. Even if your experience is scarce or you’re switching careers, it’s possible. Hire a professional writer to assist you with the proper verbiage.

Are you a doer or an achiever? Are you completing tasks and (barely) fulfilling responsibilities). OR Are you focused on delivering results and exceeding expectations? Your Experience section is your time to shine here. -Boosted bottom-line revenue by $2M YoY by implementing a new partnership program. 1. Start with an action verb. 2. Quantify impact. 3. Tell what you did. Easy peasy!

In situations where the client has Impressive relevant achievements I often list them below the skills section so that the reader’s attention gets drawn to them quickly. Top half the first page remains focal and should have impact like the often forgotten cover letter!

Don't write all your bullet points under your experience by sharing normal day-to-day activities. Instead you can have a small 1-2 lines paragraph before the bullet points explaining your day-to-day and then start with the bullet points showcasing quantifiable achievements. Numbers are important: 1) They help with understanding the impact of your actions 2) They show that you are comfortable with numbers from the beginning 3) They make the hiring team want to hear more about it
