Nanoparticles technology addresses several challenges associated with conventional drug delivery methods, including poor solubility, instability, and non-specific distribution of drugs. NPs can exploit the EPR effect, which allows them to accumulate more in tumor tissues compared to normal tissues due to the leaky vasculature of tumors and poor lymphatic drainage. For example, Doxil, a liposomal formulation of doxorubicin, is used to reduce cardiotoxicity and enhance drug accumulation in tumors via the EPR effect. Another one, gold NPs can be conjugated with drugs, such as anticancer agents, for targeted delivery and enhanced therapeutic effects. NPs can also be used for diagnostic purposes, providing a theranostic approach.

Nano-biomaterials have found growing applications in the field of tissue biomanufacturing and 3D bioprinting, as additives that could confer unique set of functionalities to the hydrogel based bioinks. For instance, gold nanorods and nanoparticles are being used to confer electrical conductivity to hydrogel bioinks used in cardiac tissue bioprinting (and tissue engineering). Silver and iron oxide nanoparticles are used as antibacterial reagents, while the latter also serves as a robust contrast agent and offers MRI visibility to the engineered scaffold.
