One of the challenges of working in a fast paced corporate accounting environment is difficulty in aligning our individual work objectives with that of the department and the organization in general. The following three steps could help corporate accountants better understand their objectives and how they are aligned with that of their department and the organization: 1. Ensure you understand your job description. Do not assume anything; 2. Ensure you agree your KPIs with your line manager. Avoid accepting ambiguous KPIs; and 3. Identify individuals within the team that you can talk to for clarity where in doubt. This is an important success factor as a corporate accountant. This will come very handy during busy season and peak period.

As time passes by and being busy with daily work, it’s easy to be forgetful of what was accomplished in a year. I have found that keeping track of projects and improvements of process, in addition to basic job duties, done during the year are helpful when it comes to evaluation time. It provides basis of a person’s achievements.
