An executive is only as strategic as the data they have access too. Strong financial data, able to be pulled quickly and sliced in different ways in real time, is vital to setting realistic goals. A true executive has a strategist on hand, usually fractional, that can monitor the macro economic trends so the organization can establish effective north stars. Strong economic understanding helps set the focus metrics for success. For instance, do presidential election years see decline in revenue historically, did you set an over index of FTE fundraisers last year to stock pile cash and set multi year commitments helping 2024 results? That would have freed you to focus on mission advancement this year and prepped for next year head start.

It also allows the right people to be at the table to be included in the decision making process. Goals are not set in stone, as there are many factors that are outside a leaders control that may challenge a goal set one month ago or even one week ago.
